I would be very surprised if this is true.
When working with a dealer, they could only refer to a list of builds that were coming their way. In order for the factory to provide this, the builds are already set. In my case, the build was on the dealer's list even though the factory had not started the production of said rig. The dealer gave me the option of putting a deposit on the vehicle, which I did. I asked about changing a few minor details on the build list and was told they could not oblige.

    Cheers

It’s true that change requests can be submitted and are sometimes granted. The dealer either lied to you because they didn’t want to deal with the hassle, or they’re poorly informed. Either way outcome probably would’ve been the same, stuck with the planned configs and what the dealer is allocated.

This is true. There is nothing a dealer can do to change a build or custom order a build. The extent of the order process from a dealer is simply a "request form" of what they want. Then they get what gets sent to them. If in production they change/add/delete anything for efficiency on the "request" then the buyer can back out and they can try another "request" but that is it. No custom orders from Toyota like many other manufacturers.

There is a change request process that is rarely approved, but the process does exist and occasionally a dealer change request is granted.

If I was a dealer owner or employee, I wouldn’t put in a modification request for anyone, not because it would hurt efficiency or lose me money, but because I want to be a thorn in the side of everyone who wants something specific, just like I have had to endure during my entire career as a Toyota customer. So I can be doing my part to make us all a little more equal <3

(also I will never be anyway, so fear not!)

I have a 14" screen and the JBL upgraded audio in my nonpremium.

I believe they call it the "upgrade" package that gets the sliding rear window, 400w ac and 12v dc in the bed, and ac/ dc outlets on the back of the console for the rear occupants- and the big screen

    No moon roof

First dealer I went to said finding a white manual offroad would be like finding a unicorn.

The next day I found a dealer with lots of dealerships (50) and they worked a trade- took 3 days to get a manual offroad in the color I wanted.

I made sure I let that first salesman know it took me 3 days to get it when I took it to his dealership for service!

I thought JBL required premium technology package? I found mine with the 14" without JBL or rear window and all the other smaller bells and whistles.

I got the same reaction when I asked the local dealer about a '23 access cab, off-road.
...found heaps of them out of state!

    Cheers

JBL comes with Sr5 upgrade, or TRD OR/TRD Sport w/ upgrade or higher

14” screen can be an individual option by itself, but it is uncommon

moonroof is an optional option on TRD OR/SPORT w/ the Upgrade package, or always on a Premium.

As others said you can get the multimedia upgrade(14" screen) as an add on package on almost every configuration.

I was only saying you can only get leather (softex) with the multimedia upgrade included. Leather is in the premium package only which includes the big screen.

I only mentioned this because I interpreted the OPs first message as wanting leather but no big screen.

Well, I guess I'm the exception.

I requested a color change, and it was approved. The truck wasn't scheduled to be built for several weeks at the time, so that probably worked in my favor. It's probably safe to say that as you get closer to the production date, requests will likely be denied.

Interestingly though, after my truck appeared on the Toyota site, two other red Limiteds also showed up within a week, all in MA. So, either my request started a small run of SS Red, or the other trucks were already scheduled, and I just added to the lot.

Ford will let you custom build to a point. They have hybrid too, have to step to a half ton. Unlike Toyota you can use the hybrid battery externally.

I was told that they make a run of a specific color, so maybe it was Red Week!

I have a TRD OR hybrid, so it had the OR "upgrade" package--the better audio and the sliding rear window (which I love), etc. The 14" display can come as an add-on if the truck has the upgrade package. As for the moonroof, they seemed to just add it automatically to everything that was coming to dealers with those two upgrades within about a 250-mile radius of me, at least from what I found in researching.

Ford has walked back the custom ordering a bit from what they offered. There was also some combinations that Ford never made but could be made on the configurator. I don't think you could get the console on a super cab 150 with the 3.73 rear gear but the configurator wouldn't allow it. Ford did, and still does offer the most customizable orderd truck available. Moving forward I think Ford will continue to go in the opposite direction on customization.

Since the supply chain has mostly caught up, you’re probably right. You can get 3.73 and the console in the SuperCab STX trim. The console shifter is gone however.

That probably changed for 24. I think I only tried to configure those options on the 3.5 I can't recall building a 2.7, I wanted the 3.73 rear, but I mostly wanted the vinyl floor and tow mirrors. Got all of those things and the rear. I still think the 2.7 payload pkg is only the 3.73 rear packaged with the smaller gas tank thus increasing the payload rating.

It was the 2.7. Believe the 36 gallon is standard across the whole line now.

This. Our 5 Toyotas going back to a 1999 were all marketed with the many options and packages listed but every one of them was what the dealer was allocated. My 2024 Tacoma is a build combo where the Kiss My Gritts app showed several like it in the Rockies & west coast but none but it in upper midwest. The dealer said they got it from trading allocations and not really ordering what several customers asked for.

@snudley your game to get what you want is a combo of using Toyota site and SmartPath plus the GitHub Kiss My Gritts. On Toyota site search the max 500 miles, then drill in for the model refining your search after that. Don't get disappointed when dealers list sold or committed vehicles as available. Your game will be harder to play if you want a long bed. You might have to accept the blue dash trim which has grown on me.
