Some good scores right here in Longmont CO. The Smokeye Hill barrel proof is absolutely amazing. No wonder Fred Minnick loves it, also Ascot award winner.

Welcome back, did you have a nice vacation?

 

It was a good time in Cincinnati. Got to attend one of coolest naturalization ceremonies ever. I went to one in uniform a couple of years ago (my wife's), this time it was her cousin. A US Marshal was there with a bagpipe in full regalia, and a member of the sons of the revolution in authentic 1776 outfit. The judge addressed each inductee personally. Really cool.

 

I got a hold of a Smokeye BP sample and blinded it with a mediocre 2023 Stagg. The Smokeye was good but the Stagg was easily better. The Smokeye had too much of an acrid oaky note on the finish whereas the Stagg finishes with a nice smooth caramel.

Minnick rated Smokeye BP as better than not only Stagg but George T Stagg. George fucking Stagg! We’re talking about 5 year whiskey versus a world famous 15 year that consistently places top 5. Smokeye is a pretty decent bourbon, but Minnick is either smoking dope or being paid off by Hazelwood Spirits.

With the inconsistencies of Stagg releases the last few years, it leaves a gap for craft distillers to fill. Back to back, Smokeye wins with 23b and 23c as the contender. Smokeyes distillery has not had regular success, in fact it’a fairly inconsistent. For now, I’m all in with Smokeye. Just purchased two more
Bottles at $110 each. 23b, $225 locally. I’m biased towards craft offerings, but are they consistent over long periods? Usually not.

 

Let’s not forget…the artificial scarcity that Buffalo Trace has put into place to drive sales, and the crazy markups the distributors have put in place …only to feel betrayed when buffalo trace drops massive inventory to Costco and WalMart for MSRP or below. This is what drives me to purchase craft at reasonable prices. I have no loyalty to any distiller or distributor that artificially raises prices based on perceived demand. I will not buy any Buffalo Trace products from a liquor store for just this reason.

I will be on work assignment in Utah 2nd week of October. Will definitely be stopping by High West to pick up some bottles.

 

Good man! They are real leaders in the finishing game, definitely going to get more of my business. The Double Rye is damned good!!!! Mid Winters Night Dram, excellent, even the Cab Finish is good...for the $$
