Lifelock does not promise to lock your driver license, credit, etc. It promises to monitor and send its revenge-warriors in to fix what it finds. Not saying you should not pay for it, just saying even they cannot prevent it.

not advised to wait until it is a big deal to take precautions, even if it is only the canary in the coal mine (it is worse than that).

Freeze your credit and call it good. Security experts? Sure they're vetted.

I didn’t say don’t do anything. Anyone affected should freeze their credit. But then again everyone should freeze their credit anyway. Not much else you can do except vigilantly check your credit report.

All I’m saying is people shouldn’t get too worked up and stressed out about this particular breach, it’s a much lower risk than some others I can think of.

If you feel the news source is not trustworthy to provide a properly researched expert, then you can “vet” them yourself by reading about the company they work for and determining on your own if you think the source is trustworthy or not. But, given the type of company that was breached, what was said makes sense logically.

totally agree. once your credit is frozen, you are also unlikely to discover surprises on your credit reports, so i, perhaps fooling myself, feel less angst when checking them.
this will all work until everyone freezes their credit and some new hack comes along to get around it. do what you can now, i guess.

It’s kind of like any lock, there’s a way to defeat it. That’s why it’s so important to check the report thoroughly every month. Only takes a couple minutes

My comment was, it was glossed over by media outlets. Freeze your credit, very little else you can do.
I'm not laying awake at night worrying about things beyond my control.

Since I use credit cards to pay utility bills now (they do not send paper bills) my company happily reports my score every month ... 800+ consistently. Still not ignoring the "check the report" advice.

Something interesting to me ... whether you have a 640 credit score or 850 ... landlords often do not care. Mortgage companies very strongly prefer 850 over 640 ...

Well it may have been glossed over because the only fact so far is that about a million people in Maine were affected.

Compare to the Yahoo data breaches in 2013 / 2014, where 3 billion were affected in one and 500K in the other, which included security questions and responses. This data was used to breach email accounts targeting specific individuals.

Basic data breaches affecting a million users happen all the time. It’s nothing.

It’s kind of like asking why a story about a couple people getting shot doesn’t become top national news…it’s horrible but not nearly on a large enough scale to make a dent in the news cycle given that shootings with many more victims happen all the time.

There’s a lawsuit alleging the number of victims of the NPD is actually much bigger, but, right now that hasn’t been established as a fact. Lawsuits exaggerate all the time.

Everyone should just assume that all of your data is going to be stolens multiple times over and over again (mine is - just recieved a notice from a hospital i used 12 years ago). In the past month i have received 2 letters explaining why they denied the credit application (scammer initiated using my stolen data) and the reason given was because they couldnt pull credit because it was - frozen. All these compaines and the Govt that collect and store our data should be forced to encrypt it immedietly upon receipt so when the scammer hacks they see shit. Since the Credit Agencies have setup Apps for the Freezing and particul UnFreezing has become much, much easier and it is way easier than trying to fix the successful Scammer Approved Credit nightmare in your Name:amen:

It’s no big deal to kick someone out if they get behind on rent (depending on laws in your state). Just get another tenant. On the other hand foreclosure is incredibly expensive and never recovers 100% of the debt owed.

The yahoo hacks that were the biggest ever data breaches in the US to date included encrypted data. Encryption is not a guarantee against data loss.

Beats the shit out of not encryption it but point taken. Did they steal key/index to the data as well?

Encrypted data like passwords was downloaded in encrypted form and then likely cracked via brute force attacks.

256-bit encryption used to be the gold-standard, partly due to computers executing millions of operations per second instead of 10s of billions of operations per second. Brute-force was not as effective then as now.

New stronger (technically) encryption methods are not as strong due to the power of new computer chips.

As I said earlier that’s what a lawsuit says. There are no facts yet to support anything other than 1.3M in ME.

Yawn... obviously you have a financial stake in pushing this narrative. "Nothing to see here folks, move on".
