2019 at 60k miles. All previous oil changes done myself every 3-5k miles using Mobil-1.

Was surprised to find a good amount of metal specks in my oil drain pan. Planning on doing lab analysis with blackstone labs, but in the meantime, was wondering if anyone else has dealt with something similar to this, or any advice in general.

I'm not seeing it, even in the top photo where there is sunlight on the oil. I see no shimmer of metal. I just see normal dirty oil that needs to be changed. Do you have a better picture showing the metal?

Here is a random picture I found on the internet..
    1000010063.jpg

I am sure if I went through my work pictures, I could find better picture...

curious as to why you removed the pan?

what brand oil filter are you using?

i do not know what they are but there sure seems to be a lot of specks and particulates. it does not look like metal in the photos. i haven't dropped many oil pans but of those i have, i have never seen so many specks and particulates.

are you certain some of those did not fall into the pan as it was being removed? have you ever examined the oil filter closely to see if there are any specks or particulates trapped, or if the filter is coming apart?

keep us posted, i am really interested to know how the oil analysis comes back.

OP is referring to the pan into which the oil is drained.

If it’s all those little chunks you’re seeing and they came out with the oil, it’s truly terrifying. You should absolutely send it to Blackstone …

there have been a few oil pumps that exploded and taken out engines other than that … not much else would cause this that is a known issue. And no it’s not normal

    OP,

Unless you've captured oil as it's coming out of the drain you won't have a good sample. Collecting what you've got in your drain pan isn't going to work. Hard to identify what's going on from your pictures.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I’ve only used the OE Toyota filter.

Confirmed that the chunks/specks are metal using a magnet. Going to swing by the dealer on Monday to see what they think. Truck drives totally fine.

Would yall recommend collecting a new sample now (fresh oil) or waiting til I have some more miles on this oil? My concern is that I’m at 59,500 miles

I would probably leave it so that when the dealer drops the actual oil pan off the engine, you haven’t flushed everything out.

I think the typical problem is something small like a cam follower needle bearing gets loose and ends up getting relocated to the pump, and grenades the pump. The pump really has no reason to spontaneously break.

What did your filter look like? Clean or particulate?
    1. I'd drop the pan and investigate.
    2. I'd put fresh oil and a new filter in and run it for 500 miles and drain the oil into an extremely clean container, something like polycarbonate, and have some type of filter or cheesecloth for the oil to pass through.
    3. If everything looks good I'd refill with new oil and I'd change the filter and run it for 2000 miles and repeat.
    4. If you still are concerned at this point I'd bring it to someone reliable to investigate.

I don’t know some dealers set it up. But it would be 5 years/60,000 mile, whichever comes first for factory warranty. Probraly dealer will not help. Try for engine oil analysis from Blackstone.

I assume you have 2.7L, 4cyl if that the case. Pour the oil from filter, or drain pan into sample bottle from send to Blackstone Labs. Let them do oil analize, go from there.
