It's going to be fun to spend our retirement exploring and improving things. In addition to a metal detector, I'm going to need a drone. It's only five acres, but it's hilly and landlocked by surrounding neighborhoods and large parcels in similar condition.

We found this thing while I was teaching my sons to drive stick. It was about 3 miles from a dirt wagon track in the wide open Pawnee National Grasslands. It was a memorial that was stolen from a grave in Nunn.

I did some research and was able to track down a relative of the deceased. I called him to inquire about the monument. He is a retired sculpture in Taos New Mexico. And it turns out, this was a very early memorial he made for his family. I agreed to return to the location in the grasslands and retreave it for the family. Lucky for me I had dropped a pin on its location. While the grasslands are treeless and open, they are not "flat" it is surprising easy to get turned around in all the little draws and gullies...

I returned the monument to a another family member in Sterling CO about 3 hours away...
.I have very mixed emotions seeing this thread and adding this.. I do somehow feel a cosmic connection to the family and the obelisk...

And I'm a truck driving AR-15 shooting redneck dad. I had to look up how to spell cosmic...

    Lol

Thats crazy. I dont understand people vandalizing someone else's memorial.

Good on you for returning it to the family

I'm not really sure how to respond to that... But it certainly sparks the old imagination.

That it does. I do often wonder how exactly so many people get separated from their unmentionables is such random places!

Thought I was hallucinating last week. Was in a campground Sunday (week before Labor Day) and it was pretty much deserted. I went through a few campsites scavenging firewood.
Later on in the evening I was going from my campfire to my camper and noticed something in a site up the hill from me. This was one of the sites I had walked through earlier and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Had to go investigate… it was a lot darker than the photos appear so I was out with my flashlight
    From my campsite

yep. Someone put LED battery operated Christmas lights on a tree in camp. I took them down so an animal didn’t get caught in them. Freaking long string too. 25’ maybe? Not sure how I had missed them earlier in the day as I was right there in front of that tree.

That's ridiculous. Why do people think that behavior is impressive?

In my young days, I would do something so stupid , not thinking out the potential consequences.
My friends and I would have walked away feeling like we had created some kind of welcome to the next campers.
I don't think any malice was intended. Just naive people.

The losing undies or Christmas decor part?
But @Stuck in VT is probably right. Folks thinking they’re being cute but not realizing they’re creating a hazard for wildlife.
Heck, I even take my hammock and clothes line down at night sometimes if there’s a lot of elk/deer/moose in the area because I don’t want to risk them getting their antlers tangled up in it should they wander through. It has happened before in Yellowstone and Teton. Not to me but I’ve seen it in the news.

They might've went to the woods for some alone time and got spotted by bigfoot and had to run!

Drove along AZ route 88, they had closed the road conveniently at a rest stop (convenient for the people who are working on the road). Found of all things:
    > Dried but probably still alive lichen on rocks in the AZ desert in 107 degree heat
    > Larry The Lounge Lizard (anyone remember that PC game from pre-FPS days?) who though he had that walkway all to itself in the unused "vista area".
