NJP can happen very quickly, especially in a case like that.

We have a rule on our books that you don't need to be convicted of DUI to be processed for separation. If the CO determines that, by a preponderance of evidence, a member was driving drunk, that's all it takes. I saw it happen to a newly reported E4. Got a DUI off-base but blew a 0.04. He was arrested even though the state limit was 0.08. My friend was assigned the investigation and he was told that the result of his investigation would be that the E4 would be processed for discharge. Such a shitty thing to do, but it's the reason why I won't even have one drink if I am going to drive.

Ugh. That's some BS right there. Totality of the circumstance, unit discretion, and all that should apply. We're already having enough problems retaining folks as it is.

You know, we're all assuming he got relieved because of the backward scope thing, but it's possible that it has nothing to do with that.

I was a bottom of the barrel nothing when I served, and I never saw anyone (Officer or senior enlisted) get relieved during my 3 years. But at least initially, they would not get demoted to a lower rank, as that would require formal "legal" proceedings per what is called the UCMJ - Uniform Code of Military Justice. And at a fairly high level of command, if the offense were serious enough to warrant a demotion / discharge, there would almost certainly be a Court Martial (military trial) involved.

If the offense was something fairly minor, the offender would likely be reassigned to an administrative ("desk job") type of position where they would not have any direct leadership or significant responsibilities for maybe a couple years. Adult version of a "time out". The military, especially these last 30 years or so, is hyper sensitive to any perceived screw ups by high level / visible leadership positions, and they will take action pretty quickly. Though unless it is something truly horrific, like rape/murder/selling military secrets to the enemy.... the specific details almost never come out to the public. Everybody saves a little face that way.

When I was in my third year of duty at Ft Riley in the Signal Company. We got in a Second Lt that was a complete Idiot he was really pushing it with everyone, he was one of those guy's that would cross a parking lot just to cross paths with you to make you salute him kinda guy. Well our 1st Sgt got tired of getting complaints with this nut and even getting into it with him himself so the next thing we all know the Lt has been transferred to the Infantry unit next door. We can see this Lt marching in the snow and all kinds of bad weather. Word got out that the 1st Sgt got tired of his shit and got rid of him.

    Likely closer to the truth.

I can definitely see the type of command that would get your guys to throw you under the bus with a shitty photo op pic, having a command climate that would have unresolved problems (hey pencilwhip it so that our readiness sheet is all green), then having it fall out during unrep.

Thanks for posting the article. It kinda looks like the Navy is blaming the Captain despite him repeatedly saying that his ship was not safe to sail. They would have relieved him if he refused to sail, as well, so he was screwed either way.

Pretty much, but after a steering gear failure, last I looked at an UNREP checklist wasn't 'sit there and diagnose', it was 'break away now'.

Was he set up to fail? Likely.. was there a fail he could have prevented? Yup. Does surface navy have issues? Esp culturally? You've hit my trap card...

Every joe would rather the commander slip them a $20 in his hand than a useless coin that gets tossed in a bin somewhere.

Since we’re both USCG and understand the enlisted advancement system, how much does comp time help you come SWE time?
