It's NoVa (Northern Virginia) that's incongruent with the rest of the state.
You know, where so many DC federal government types live
The rest of Virginia is very nice indeed.

Yeah, PA is not like the rest of the northeast... at all.
Shall issue, open carry state.
Dunno if it's still true, but last I looked, PA had more licensed hunters than any other state.

As the saying goes, Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh and Philly with Alabama in between
It's not so much Pittsburgh as Philly (and the snotty bougies that live in the Philly 'burbs) that so many of us dislike.

Right, most of PA is small town and down home.
But there are also the old mill towns (which have fallen on hard times), which help to impart a distinct character.

Story Time with Gritto

As some of you may remember, the Lovely, Sainted and Formidable Mrs Gritto is from Johnstown.
Before all the steel mills shut down, Johnstown was not far behind Pittsburgh itself in steel production.
She's the daughter of a steel worker, and her older brothers were steel workers as well.
She was the baby of the family, and the first to get a college degree.

Johnstown was always a gritty, working class town.
But the people there were, and are, some of the most genuine people you could ever meet.

Ever see the movie The Deer Hunter?
That was about people from Johnstown and how the war in Vietnam affected them.

Then there's Slapshot (with Paul Newman).
The Charlestown Chiefs in the movie were a thinly disguised reference to the Johnstown Jets, a minor league hockey team.
The Hanson bothers in the film were directly modeled on the Carlson brothers of the real-life Jets hockey team.
The movie was filmed in Johnstown, and many outdoor scenes are identifiable.
