I’ve been getting my oil change every 5,000 miles the other week a coworker
needed a jump popped my hood and I was missing my oil cap
Not sure how long it has been missing dealer had a new cap for me and an also had the oil changed again. I didn’t look under the hood much seeing how it has lees the 20,000 mikes but now it’s a take a look under the hood every week thing for me .

Lesson learned, check their work! Oh, and shame on you for not popping the hood every now and then for a look-see!

this happened to me too... dealer changed it last and tried to throw the blame on me/the truck. they said that they see oil caps unthread pretty frequently on 3g tacos...

I lightly nudge my oil cap with my index finger and thumb. Never had it come loose in 8.5 years.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
I think one of the worst things you can have a dealer do is an oil change. Most people think an actual mechanic is working on the vehicle and that is rarely the case. These are lube techs. The lowest of the totem pole in a shop. The majority do not make much more than minimum wage. The dealer expects 3-5 oil changes an hour out of them. In many cases they line 3 -5 vehicles up and go down the line. Draining oil, change filter I doubt canister filters get changed if they are in a rush), reinstall drain plug and fill oil and they are on their way. Keep in mind, if that tech stops to talk to someone, takes a phone call. Get's sidetracked for any reason. They miss a step.
I got free oil changes when I got my last Tacoma. It was winter so I took it in and figured I would let them do it. Free oil change and tire rotation. I marked the inside of my tires and when the truck came back out I opened the hood. Checked the oil cap and pulled the dipstick. They asked what I was doing and I said I was checking to make sure everything was right. They did change the oil correctly but did not touch my tires. I said "did you rotate the tires?" They said "oh yes sir". I said strange that the inside of that one still says RR on it. Meaning right rear. If you look across you will see LR and then LF and RF. Seems they are still in the same place as when I brought it in. They said they would take it right back to do it and I told them I would do it myself. Along with my oil changes from now on.
Crazy the sale price to change the oil at the GM dealer is $200 now. I can buy Amsoil and a Wix filter and do it myself for $70.

Had the same thing happen to me when I bought mine used from a Mazda dealer. Can’t be sure if it vibrated loose or if it just wasn’t reinstalled. Picked up a new one from Toyota for fairly cheap.

It was definitely a first for me. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t catch it until my first oil change 5k later.

^^^ Due to suspicion that they didn’t change the filter due to FN up by losing the oil filler cap, I imagine.

They don’t vibrate loose. lol…you all do realize that the service writer 99 of 100 times knows absolutely nothing about cars right? They are glorified secretaries. I would be impressed if one could point out the oil fill cap to you under the hood. They are just sales people for parts and service.

I share your experience, I have been licensed to drive since 1962, have always changed my own oil and never had an oil cap come off....I sometimes think service writers/managers have a PHd in BS.
