Just read this too. I'm having a hard time with the info out there. Seems to be misinformation and confusing info at times regarding Toyota and their path toward EV's. Lots of info saying Toyota wants nothing to do with EV's and reports like this stating they're on track.

If it's true, and this is a reality in 2-6 years It would be something to look forward to. The range and charging times seem unreal. Don't know if a fully electric Tacoma would have the same range in real world results. Look forward to the day these SSB EV's are common and are performing as advertised.

Solid state batteries are only 5 years away, Toyota 2012. The word for this is FUD. It is how Toyota keeps people on the sidelines and not buying their competitors EVs. If SS batteries ever make it out of the lab, they might increase range. The question is can they do it price competitively? They might last longer, but the current ones are brittle and prone to breakage with vibration. Cars don't vibrate do they? The thing they can't do is charge any quicker than the current battery technology. The limitation is in the infrastructure. Think of it like this: Let's say a 20 gallon gas tank could take up to 10 gallons/minute. If you pull up to a gas pump that puts out 5 gallons/minute it will take 4 minutes to fill the tank. I doesn't matter one little bit that the tank could take 10 gallons/minute because the pump is the limiting factor.

Honestly I wish the EV makers would start educating the public on how easy it is to live with an EV. There is so much BS and misinformation it's crazy. I've owned an EV for 2.5 years and 50K miles and I'm never buying another gas engine again. I keep my Tacoma for truck things and when it dies there will be a Ford Lightening in my driveway to replace it. (that is unless something better comes along)

    like the rivian?

i think ford would be the last manufacturer i'd choose to buy an EV from

Eh, just remember, say, a nominal 300 mile range with an empty truck, aero fairing, and street tires becomes something like 250 once y'all slap all that overland crap onto it, then 200 once you start driving it @80mph. Then if you're towing, cut that in half. Same applies to the ICE taco, too. 20 mpg becomes more like 18 with all the non aerodynamic crap, then 15 when y'all drive 80mph and wonder what happened to your fuel economy.

That said, a ERBEV/PHEV setup would be pretty amazing.

The list of EV truck makers is short. Maybe I'd buy the GM truck. The Rivian is OK too. I own a Tesla, but the cyber truck is to divisive. Or, I'd sell the Tacoma to buy this. It's coming the same time as solid state batteries, so I'm not holding my breath. (also since buying the Tesla 2.5 years ago I've put 2K miles on my Tacoma. At that rate I'll die before it does. lol)

dont forget with an EV you have to take into account the temperature. extreme temps can severely impact the range. with ICE you wouldn't have to worry about that as much

Eh ICE loses ~10% in the winter too.

You'll still need to run heaters for passenger comfort and deal with higher rolling resistance in snow, etc, even if your batteries don't suffer range issues when cold, so there will still be a reduction from the rated range.

True. But now you aren't heating or cooling the batteries.

Is extreme cold an issue for you in Louisiana ?

Only 100hp or so in EV mode and kinda a small battery, but apparently it's mounted between the frame rails. Nice final numbers on the setup, though... even if it's a little less than the 300 ish HP I get on the Rav. :p

Most modern EVs (and PHEVs) have pack cooling for high temps. Also, ICE also get issues with high temps (ever have a radiator boil?), and solid state batteries will have a wider temperature range as noted above.

i didnt say that ICE engines DON'T have issues. i simply said they don't have to worry about the temperature issues as much. also one could argue that those issues can be addressed before hand with proper planning/equipment upgrades... beefier cooling systems, etc.

So ... thoughts on the Scout EREVs?

VAG, but body on frame, solid rear axle, pretty generous ground clearance, and an ICE rage extender...
