Bed widening to fit 4x8 sheets

was looking for a wheel for the truck's spare and got
a great deal on 4 wheels so the trailer got the remaining
3 the trailer's spare is also an offroad wheel

 

Well, maybe the tacoma designers took the idiot factor into account. Because, we all know that everyone runs stock tires. No one ever puts on oversized/wider tires.

 

He needed to take his clearance measurement when the wheel well was packed up with frozen mud. Fronts don't steer well either when that is going on......

 

Where have you been these past 7500+ TW posts?

Do you have an opinion about the "stock only" bumpers, lights, stereo systems and suspensions?

 

I think it’s composite decking but that aside they remind me of El Caminos or Rancheros rather than trucks. I can’t recall seeing lumber racks on any of those either.

 

I am old ... I am blind and am typing on a braille keyboard. But I agree ... many were sad at the demise of the Subaru Brat and other pseudo-trucks. The open bed of El Camino and Ranchero were quite useful to the creative people in the 70s and early 80s.

 

Somehow my dad managed to build two houses, in his spare time, using a mid 70s Ranchero to haul materials.

 

I doubt he used it as improperly as this. 4x8 sheets would be fine for these beds but not 12’ lengths unless run over the gate and cab(don’t get behind one of these on the freeway). I’ve built several homes and even with a truck and lumber rack we’d still get most materials delivered by yard trucks.

 

Man there are some over complicated setups in here. I use two 57” boards that are mismatched and just move my tailgate cable up. Only thing I needed that wasn’t on the truck already was a couple spare washers. Tools go in the bedside storage so I can put my tailgate back to normal away from home (hauling shit to buddy’s house).

I still want to find a reasonably working "land yacht" like the Oldsmobile and Cadillacs. Or maybe one of the mid-70s station wagons that are longer than my current DCSB Tacoma.

 

i drove a 77 caddy sedan deville when i was in college in the early 90s, very similar to this, but it was old and junky. drivers floor was rusted through. AC was busted. gas gauge was busted. got 10 miles to the gallon, so i just reset the trip every time i put 5 gallons in it. it was about a dollar a gallon then so 5 bucks for 50 miles. lol. If i went over 55 mph it spit oil out of the engine. i had 0 dollars to fix it. dad gave it to me if i fixed the leaking radiator. pulled one out of a junk yard for like $20. gave it back when i got another ride and he solde it off for $500 and they blew the engine and it caught fire.
you have no idea how much stuff i did in that car that i should have been arrested for.

 

the reason i know about that page is because i have the sales brochure...

for 6 months, there was a somewhat rough '72 ranchero for sale down the street from me. i stared it down every day on the way to and from work...

main problem being it was rough, and '72 was a one-year body style. there aren't replacement parts outside of whatever someone's hoarded over the years to sell at exorbitant prices...

still love that model year ranchero or el camino, but far happier with the cost, maintenance, and reliability of the sales brochure over the real thing!

 

Engine was probably a massively powerful 150 HP 4.8L V8. And the engine only used about half of the engine bay.

Ah ... yes ... few kids today understand the joke in "Spaceballs" about getting $5 of gas ...

 

I think it was the 500 cu in in there. Still probably only 250 hp

 

We do not like the HP of the Atkinson, but it exceeds 250. Gotta love mid-70s Detroit "Muscle"!

Isn't a part of the chicken tax the distance between wheel wells? I swear some of the reason they make it like this is because of stupid US laws, not that they don't think we'd appreciate being able to put a full sheet down. I am getting old enough though that I could just be making this up and spouting off like it's fact.

 

It’s not as if bigger trucks aren’t available. Bed size kinda goes with the mid size truck thing. I’ve always just used lumber racks prior to this truck and they did the job nicely on my two Rangers even though they were even narrower than my current ride.
