Embodied energy/carbon is pretty often ignored. It drives me crazy. In a lot of applications what's even worse is that "old" energy is often even dirtier, e.g. something built with low-regulation coal or worse is going to have a heck of a lot more embodied greenhouse than something made with higher regulated/cleaner/"newer" energy, and so often scrapping it early to make way for "cleaner" is a net negative.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
Its been slow at work so I've spent the last couple of days cleaning up the truck and car.
It's amazing how well some of these new products work.

Exactly, it's not that we have to gain it as individuals but the trickle down effect. Same reason you have the auto stop/start as another thing..my wife just rented a Chevy Equinox and freaked out when that kicked in thinking it was dying every time she stopped. Might save a tad of fuel here and there (though I suspect in more cases than not it doesn't, depending on how you drive) but what's the cost to replace the secondary starter and how long will it take to get there?

That's just it, big picture this is true but the EPA cares not a whit about that. Stupidity and short sightedness.

Back when cash for clunkers was going on I was an XJ Cherokee owner. I thought people were crazy for scrapping perfectly good XJs. A lot of those jeeps would probably still be running today. Their replacements are probably already in the junkyard. :D

It’s getting really crazy in the building industry. Especially places like Boston where they are pushing out fossil fuels. Let’s get rid of a functional natural gas heating system and replace it with a new electric system that takes natural resources and energy to manufacture and transport and then power it with electricity produced by burning natural gas, then transport that electricity long distances, then convert that electricity back to heat in the building. That makes perfect sense.o_O

I get the thought process if someone could get a much nicer vehicle..I forget what he had/purchased but my friend's son made out well with that.

From what I remember, a lot of dealers got screwed because the government never paid them whatever the promised subsidy was.

Plus as noted, a lot of very good vehicles with collector potential were crushed.

That’s not just Boston, that’s the state building code, the energy code amendment. It’s state-wide, some cities/ towns have just opted to guzzle the Kool-Aid rather than just take the sip they’ll be forced into regardless.

Auto start stop (ASS) isn't TOO bad in that it doesn't kill the engine unless it's up to temp, so the starters don't see much added wear since the added starts are hot starts.

I just really don't like the engine being off. First off, the AC dies out. (It doesn't ASS if the defroster is on, typically, so that's good at least). Second off, the shudder of starting and stopping all the time is just :puke:

Cash for clunkers also killed the used market for new drivers. These perfectly fine 3-5k cars were just getting liquid cement poured into the block. It decimated the market for kids to get a cheaper car.

I wonder how much funny business went on if someone gave up a nice vehicle for scrapping? Did the dealer swap it out for a real junker and keep the better vehicle?

    Any motorcycle folks in here?
Short story: My uncle owned a moto shop in the 70s in Rhode Island. My other uncle bought a 1975 Ducati 860GT from him. Rode is across the country a couple of times. Put it away in the garage in 1984 when his daughter was born. I got it from him in ~2016, I think. Wasn't able to get it on the road myself. FINALLY brought it to Nova in western Mass and they got it sorted out. 49 years later, it's back on the road. Not sure I'll be riding it across the country without a fairing, but I can get one on there next spring.

I am, or used to be... I still really like them but I don't ride hardly at all anymore. Traffic around here is too nutty. I can see getting back into riding once my kids are grown.
That Ducati is a cool machine!

I had begged my uncle for this bike since I was probably 12 or 14, before I had even ridden motorcycles. So I was stoked when many years later he called me to sort out the deal.

I used to own a Harley 1200XL, rode it to Texas and back. Super fun bike. But haven't ridden one for 10+ years at this point. This bike is super fun, easy enough to handle. Pretty great for the roads up here in Vermont.

I started on dirt bikes when I was young. I had my first dirt bike around 7 or 8. I kept upgrading as I grew and ended up with an XT350 Dual Sport, which was my entry to riding on the road. Then I went from that to an old CBR600 (the Hurricane, first year they called it the CBR), then a Katana 750 and now back to a 350 Dual Sport. I did a trip down to the Outer Banks and back for my college graduation, that was the longest I spent on a bike. We took a week, stayed in the KOA camping cabins and packed light. I miss it, I grew up in upstate NY where the roads were perfect for riding. Around here, there's too many cars and they're just nutty, half of them are looking at their phones rather than the rider they're about to run over.

Playing with this Launch Edition 250 for a week (for those that don't know, my side job/gig is writing car reviews...). Curious to see how it behaves compared to my GX460 and the Land Cruisers, 4Runners, and GXs I've owned and driven.
