Love it. Going from a 99 1st gen (still have btw) to this is like going from a horse and buggy to a spaceship but it's great. Acceleration, braking, seat comfort, rides smooth on and off road, all of it is great. Very minor quips like no sh*t handle on drivers side, connectivity with Android Auto randomly craps out like once a month, and the wacky white trim accents in my dark interior but those are minor things. Will it last as long as my 1G? I'm kinda skeptical but enjoying it nonetheless.

Better question is why did they start this way? Other 6-speeds are down-right just like 5-speeds.

I’m assuming it is because that is what the engineers are familiar with when designing their transmissions. And there have never been issues with the positioning of the reverse gear so why would they change it?

A little browsing through history in the 3rd Gen section shows when people starting actually buying 2016 model years, once available back in late 2015/early 2016, the biggest complaints were about the looks of the grille, the size of the rear seat in double cabs, and the way the automatic transmission shifted. I got to about 10 pages in to that thread (once they were actually being driven) before a mechanical issue was brought up. Compare that to about two pages in on the 4th Gen forum where transmission failures, oil leaks, check engine lights, etc. started rearing their heads. I don't have an opinion on either, as I sold my 2013 in 2019, and am driving a 21-year old Tacoma that just keeps going. So today's issues don't seem exactly the same as the 3rd Gen IMO.

Wife and I currently own a VW, Porsche, Toyota and Ford with 6 speed manuals. Reverse is on the left. Who makes them on the right? Honda, Subaru, Nissan?

My civic, both of my Nissan Z’s were on the right as well as my Wrangler. I think my Chevy Sonic was on the left. Never really thought anything of it. That’s just where reverse was.

The few I drove with R up left, had to push down, I’ve put it in reverse a few times by accident on the Taco because I tried to go quick, luckily there’s a beep and I notice before moving, so no harm. Just annoying. Slowly getting used to it.

I loved the highway shift into 6th on the Wrangler. Is that 6th or reverse? Kept you on your toes!

Coming from 5th to 6th no issue. From 4th to 6th like I often do, different story. However, I don’t think I ever had a close call with my Xterra 6 speed.

I am curious, how are the seats? I have a Gen2 and my wife hates the seats. When riding shotgun, I agree they sort of suck. (Not sure why I never noticed it when driving). Anyway, I was considering swapping my 2gen seats for 4Gen seats if they are more comfortable. Thoughts?

I find them very comfortable. I have the manual seats and they raise lower, but equally front to rear. I find they recline too much for my legs with bad blood circulation, I added spacers under the rear mounts to bring them closer to level. Wouldn’t be an issue with the electric seats.

I have to say that I made a serious mistake in buying my 2024 TRD Sport. I should have done more research on it before I pulled the trigger. Biggest issues I see are the lack of auto 4wd (seriously every 4wd truck I've owned since 1994 has had this), lack of a limited slip diff (try accelerating on wet roads without this), and a small gas range. Had I know all this ahead of time I would have walked away. Oh well lesson learned, keep it for a few years and hope for a good trade in on something else, but it won't be a Toyota.

Does the TRD Sport not have an lsd in the rear? I read somewhere that it did. I haven’t driven it hard enough to find out yet, still in the break in period.

All 2x4 have an LSD, 4x4 has A-Trac, Off Road has MTS and rear locker.

Oh wow thanks for sharing that. Well dang, I should have held out for an OR but I’ll have to make do with my sport.
