When this got popular in the late 80s, my father and his engineer buddies designed and built one to launch as far as possible. They found that hairspray in the end of the cannon and on the loaded potato was sufficient to be ignited by the push button grill ignitors. It was something where they had no idea where the potatoes were ending up. Never put anything past power generation engineers.

I've made my share of them. Many experiments were had.

Hot potatoes just make mashed rain. Carved ballistic potatoes do not increase the range. Rifled barrels do help somewhat, but good luck rifling the inside of PVC with home tools. Pumpkins make great targets for potato carnage. Aquanet always wins on distance. Oh, and there's a fine line between finding the perfect fuel mix and blowing your breach clean off.

 

Many years ago me and a few buddies were screwing around with a tater gun and we ran out of hair spray. One of my buddies said, I have an idea and wheeled a tank of acetylene out of the garage. It worked great until he put too much acetylene in it and it exploded into about 27 pieces.

Though at least PA state troopers are unlikely to be assholes about it in a traffic stop.

Maryland drivers are notorious for driving like grannies when they're here in PA.
They've been terrorized by the goddamn cameras all over Maryland and the automated speed tickets.
