I was also wondering about the highest mileage failure. 2kish was the highest I'd seen posted somewhere.

Edit: Just checked NHTSA and someone with 6k and 4k recently posted. Also a new hybrid failure post with less than 400 miles. Total is still under 20 on there but a youtuber that contacted a dealer, told him 300 trans were on backorder. So dunno

Someone should start a thread with basic failure data. Mileage, Vin, build date etc? NO comments just data..!

Practically speaking what’s the point of this TSB? Let’s say you have a hybrid and your transmission fails… they will do the same thing despite your vin not being on this list. They will replace the tranny. So.. why not say .. if you get these codes just replace the trans and TC?

If you have the codes outside of the vin range they will reset them and send you on your way. If you have 1 of these codes and your vin is inside the vin range you get a new transmission.

That sucks. But if trans shits the bed entirely I guess it’s the same. I see the difference now.

You read the Tundra HV shudder thread? Post 36 replaced electric motor solved the problem.

Maybe this has already been addressed in a prior post, but if you drained out a few ounces of transmission fluid and sent it off to one of the car fluids labs for a chemical analysis, wouldn't the debris show up as "unnatural chemical spikes" in the fluid analysis?

I don't know the size of this "debris" but as long as you had a few thousand miles on the transmission, some of the "unnatural chemicals" from the debris should be infused into the transmission fluid, or it would seem like it.

If so, Toyota should work a deal with these labs so owners can send their fluid in for analysis, free of charge (paid by Toyota). It's possible not every truck in the VIN range had debris or was poorly cleaned or whatever the source of the issue is.

The “debris” line from toyota seems like absolute nonsense to me. A slick lawyer came up with that. I would know.

Debris is probably partially true (as in there is probably debris in there after the failure) and makes it sound kind of benign when it’s really a design or much deeper QC problem.

What are the odds the Kentucky / San Antonio engines for the Tundra had “debris” in them .. and then the Aisin engines in Japan … also had debris falling into them from the shop room ceiling .. sounds like bs

Kentucky had milling debris, Japan had casting debris likely (sand). To be honest I think it has a lot to do with worker shortages and poor workmanship. I until recently dealt with it first hand on a daily basis. Management hiring anybody with a heartbeat! They hire them knowing they are poor candidates and expect the experienced workers to train them, and wonder why it doesn’t work out after management’s designated training period! Which is often not near long enough for the ones lacking any real work experience or common sense! The tiniest mistake when working with complex machines always surfaces.

Makes sense. I guess the challenge there is what if yours got “some” sand .. just enough to reduce the life or make it over heat, but not enough to blow it up. And when they replace them … are the new ones any better? Oh well. I’ll probably grab a platinum plan and put it out of my mind.

Who truly knows other than Aisin/Toyota? I’m honestly kicking around the idea of a 8/125k plan as well.. I’ve got until 3/36k to decide so I’m going to wait for more info? I’d hate to buy one then get the Tundra free B recall

Same boat. At this point I’m probably going to get it just for peace of mind so I can stop thinking about it. Then again… drivetrain is a full 60K or 5 years for all our trucks. That’s a long time. I hear you can shop around for a good price on the platinum.

Come to think of it.. my 2022 TRD Pro had a recall for welding debris on the rear axle … lots of debris folks .. lots of debris … Toyota need to hire a CDO - Chief Debris Officer … with one job - eliminate debris
