Took advantage of the Labor Day deals and got me a set of RCI skid plates. I've read about the clangs which can occur if the bolts aren't torqued correctly, but I want to put some sort of sound-deadening device in place anywhere the plates overlap. Maybe also between the frame and plates at the bolt holes?

Has anybody done this on their plate installs? Might this be a bad idea for any reason?

Not a bad idea at all. I did it also. Truevalue has these dense rubber washers that hold up great. Very difficult to tear. For me they created a little bit of space I needed and act as a tiny buffer between the metals. Keeps the squeaking down.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. Happy to hear it worked well for you!
