I can’t tell if my 2022 SR has the tow package.

that is an OE tow package hitch, there was no external trans cooler on your year, like mentioned, look for the OE 7 pin connector on the bumper

I'm not sure about newer trucks, but those with tow package are rated at 6400-6500 lbs towing. The ones without tow packages can still tow, but are limited to 5000 lbs.

But that is how much they are rated to PULL. You also have to consider how much weight the suspension is rated for and that is based on your payload rating. Which is different for every truck, you'll just have to check the sticker on the driver's door jamb. MOST 3rd gen 4x4 crew cab Tacoma's will be rated between 900-1100 lb. A 2wd and/or access cab will be a little higher. That is the limiting factor and very few Tacoma's can realistically tow much over 4500-5000 lbs even with the tow package.

If you have the 7 pin connector you're good for at least 5000 lbs. If the GVWR of the trailer is 3000+ you also need trailer brakes and you may need to install a brake controller if it doesn't have one from the factory. Not expensive nor hard to do.

Before this thread goes off the rails with well intended yet inaccurate information. Here are some specs from a Toyota dealer. In 2022 if it's a v6 it is rated at about 6500lbs and if it's a I4 its rated at 3500lbs. The "tow package" doesn't have any meaning post some year prior to 2022. I remember it having meaning in 2016 when I bought my SR5, but not when I bought my 2020 OR.

I was insinuating that whatever it is, if it has the factory pieces it is the "tow package" for that year. No one in their right mind would add those factory pieces, the OE bar, OE 7 pin for what they are worth from the dealer

I have the tow package...but was told it needed a brake controller installed in order for it to work correctly..

Some don’t have the 130-amp alternators either - when I was shopping for mine in ‘17, one dealer showed me one with a “tow package” and it had those OEM plugs on it, but then upon inspecting it some more for what else was installed, I could see that the receptacle was the only thing they added, there was no external transmission cooler (like the real tow packages being sold back then) and it had just a 100-amp alternator. I don’t know if it had a trailer brake connector, I didn’t look for it back then. I ended up going to a different dealer and got the real thing instead for the same upgrade price.

See Carbie’s post earlier for the plug you need, it’s easy to install the controller if you want to do it yourself.
