Poor girl! Of all the nasty things we have here in AZ I'm glad we don't have those. I did help a friend de-quill his heeler in Idaho once, not fun!

Ironically some pups never learn to avoid porkies. Have had to visit vet to remove quills. It’s tough on young dogs, all dogs for that matter. MTG

My buddie's German wire haired pointer/Draathar (spp?) got porkied while we were grouse hunting at camp one year. We removed as many as we could in the woods then we headed to the local vet - I knew the location as another friend had his beagle there for the same reason earlier that year!!!! We went to a bar for an hour or so (at the vet's recommendation!) as the vet removed what he could and cut the rest off flush. The worst part was he said " the dog will never learn" and would go after the next porcupine he sees again and again. Almost 100 quills total!!!

Nice! Some buddies of mine thought I was crazy taking my 28ga sage grouse hunting, but it's plenty of gun when you have a good dog also took some MT sharpies with it as well.

My 28 gauge performs well as long as I do my part. My lab, Belle, is an upland hunting machine. Hunt the way you determine works for you. Enjoy the hunt. MTG

Our 5 month old GSP. Working on his training getting ready for next season. First bird dog I will have trained from scratch. Not easy haha. Ended up installing a pigeon coop and now trap pigeons for training etc. Using Standing Stone Kennels training program for guidance and wearing out boots and tires training every weekend. I took 25+ years off from Bird hunting but now my daughter is turning 10 and wants to learn so here we go. He is my 4th GSP but my wife's first haha! I don't think she has ever hated my choices so much and she may never trust me again.

Ha ha my wife says the same thing about my puppy GWP. Did you pay the 500 for standing stones program?

Yeah.....,... I will say though, TOTALLY working and worth it (as of right now). It was a hard pill to swallow but all of our past GSP's were ok hunters with us training them but never amazing. This dog is already shaping to be better than our past ones so it is working.
We are talking to a Bracco Italiano breeder about picking one of their pups up next year once this guy is dialed in a bit more.

I convinced my now wife to get a GSP as our first dog together. She had dogs growing up but little do-nothing lap dogs. I don’t think she trusts my dog choices either now haha. Awesome dogs but damn loads of energy

Not too many things happier than a GSP off leash harassing all the birds

A GWP puppy sunning herself might be pretty close.

SO! My 10yr old daughter is up for her first season! I was going to put her on the 410 that My great grandfather bought for my great grandmother. My grandfather learned to hunt with it when he was a kid, my dad learned to hunt with it when he was a kid, my brother and I also started on it. Unfortunately my daughter is pretty small and can't really wield it. Looking around for a lighter shotgun for her I realized that here in CA with our gun laws, they cannot sell guns marketed to "youth". No youth shotguns. Some manufacturers are marketing them as "scout" etc but what a joke. :frusty: I think I may have tracked down a used 20 gauge pump and I'll just have to hand load some light ones for it. At least she won't be as disappointed missing for the first few trips like I was when I was a kid! Haha

Had a great Labor Day morning out with the kids and the dog. It’s their first time hunting with me, and better yet we actually had success and put a bird in the bag!

Very nice. I had the puppy out for her first outing no birds but she did amazing. Worked at a great distance and her recall was 100% which was my goal for this first hunt.

Our quail/grouse opener is the 19th... It will be my daughter and my dogs first hunt! Hunting / firearms related, I have a million things I should be doing but instead I decided to build these for my daughter's hunters safety instructors. She had a little trouble with the test and the way the questions were worded. While sitting through the class with her, the same way my dad did with me, I got to talking with the instructors and they mentioned something similar to these helping teach the class. Going to surprise them next week.

Wow, very nice. Something like those would have been great when I was a hunter safety instructor. Great job..

Looks like it was a lot of fun. I got the wife and puppy out yesterday we only walked for about 30 minutes when the pup got into a yellow jacket nest she took 7 or 8 stings including 2 on her eyelid they were buried deep in her fur I had to pull each one out. The wife got 5 stings and I got one. We got some benadryl in each of us but the hunt was over. Lucky none of us had a bad reaction.
