I’m about hour and a half south of Chicago. Clean classics or UJMs like the CBX always catch me eye around here as I see less and less nowadays. Around here it’s primarily HDs and Sport Bikes. I’ve owned everything from Yamaha RD350s to HD Street Glide. Currently down to one bike now, VFR800. just sold my XR on Sunday, and I think I might be having some remorse already.

Thanks guys, I can tell you’re really giving my questions some thought, I appreciate it.

As for aesthetics I guess I am more classic leaning and less into the Ninja type styling. I know dual sport, scramblers, and ADV’s can all do pavement and dirt so it kind of comes down to price and riding ergonomics. I’m 5’ 8” by the way.
A used desert sled might be a good option
ADV would be cool but I think they’re pretty pricey no?

5'8" but what inseam length? There are folks out there that look to be all torso and some are all leg and that's going to make more of a difference than overall height. Bear in mind as well that you don't buy a bike to stand on it so you need to decide your own comfort level when stopped. There are some shorter female riders on BMW GS models that I wouldn't be too comfortable on with that seat height. I may have missed it but how much actual seat time do you have on bikes? I'm always hesitant to recommend a large bike to a new rider but if you're going to be riding interstates yo have to have something with some motor behind it and on that type of road a little more weight can be your friend. Suzuki V-strom 650 maybe? Good reputation and pretty reliable with good aftermarket support.

Got the S2's mounted and wired for a temporary light solution - thanks @Hafaday for the schematic. Output is decent, but they're too low overall so the power of them is washed out when adjusting for long range visibility. Still a huge improvement over the OEM candle grade lantern. Retrofit this winter to resolve all the issues!

i just looked at his posts and i saw one in Michigan so just guessing lol

so if you are looking at a ninja and dont want a lot of power just get a little 400-500cc sport bike and ride and learn and have some fun! its not the fastest thing in the world but a slow bike is a blast to rip around town.

but if you are wanting to do offroad as well then you need two bikes or you need to go dualsport/ adventure bikes. being your height it can be a bit of a struggle since im around there as well.

What does a desert highway look like - sandy version of a FSR / BDR? If it's essentially a dirt highway dual sport is not necessarily needed IMO.

Are these the S2 Sports or Pros? What beam pattern are they?

I'm debating making my own headlight with a couple of the S2's but I have never observed their light output in person.

Took my headlight right off and stuck a led bar on making a wiring harness from the stock wiring and works awesome

Pro's and Spot beam pattern. 2015'ish, so probably down on power these days compared to whatever is new.

When I first got them I did a dry fit test on my 4Runner up on the roof rack, and with no other lighting they were plenty for pitch black woods exploration. If you can think of a method for comparison to something I can get some output shots for you.

A good option if my retrofit somehow does not offer enough light.

Side note - what silicone rad hoses are those?

Plenty of people have and do. Just because you don’t t doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

    my .02$

Nevada Highways are straight and traffic on them is MOVING (75-90). You want to be planted and you need to have throttle response at speed. Most of the smaller dispacement bikes will dissappoint, and cross ADV bikes with aggressive tires, a blast for hooliganism, won't give you much of a tire patch on the highway. A Desert sled to me sounds cruiserish, which WOULD work on the slab, but is less fun off it. As a new rider, IMHO (others will share theirs! and they should) a standard position is better for learning. ADV's are uptright and comfortable (yes they're the hot item now, so even smaller displacement can get pricey)

I think something like a USED Triumph Bonneville T100/Royal Enfield Interceptor 650/Moto Guzzi V7 might be a good option. Street tread/highway capable/upright and versatile position. Not too expensive. Classic style that continues to sell without ever changing. You can ride a dirt road, you can hop on the highway, you can ride around town and it'll get it done. Can be ound all day long from $4500 to $6500
