I like the standard housing. It has a small amount of resistance so it won't loosen up. Tighten it down just until it stop them give just a very small amount more. I have never had it leak and I can easily remove without any struggle at all using a cheap filter wrench from Wally World.

Yes, you can damage absolutely everything. But you can repair on your driveway.

I figured just have a spear in hand if you ever damage it during an oil change. You have a back up

Sometimes, It does not have to be a long thought out process of whats better for what reasons. Who gives a shit about an oil filter canister. Use whatever works. I swapped mine to the aluminum one because I liked it more than the plastic one and I felt it would be less likely to strip the exterior shape of it.

Once you strip one, you will also consider it. I know cheap is subjective, but it's under 30 bucks. It's kind of a useless point on the don't waste your money side of the argument. How much money do you realistically spend on beer, cigs, sneakers, hot wheels, but $30 for an oil filter canister, thats where you draw the line.

Not sure if aluminum is better than the composite or not as I have never really considered it. I tend to leave it alone if it's working. For what it's worth I have over 90,000 on the original. It was 113 degrees out or something like that here yesterday, the components in the engine bay stay hot forever. Removed the retaining clip the first oil change and threw it out. I torque to spec and do my own change, so no issues. I think what's more important is to change your own oil and filter and stay away from service centers and stealerships as they have a well-known history of screwing up the simplest of jobs.

My wife has swapped financial management roles with me...she's a much better budgeter than I ever was! lol

We all have different spending patterns...that's for sure.

Budgeting for these expenses is critical if you're trying to keep track of expenses.

I bought mine because of how over-torqued it was from the dealership...I was thinking I'd be breaking the winglets when I do oil changes.

Replacing the plastic housing with aluminum was just for peace of mind...and that was worth the one-time cost--I still have the plastic one!

I make sure to twist the housing correctly...smooth and easy...and then hand-tighten when flush at contact point.

This last oil change (In April) I noticed the housing was not as difficult to twist off as the plastic one.

I'm happy with my decision and also happy with the Fumoto Valve I started using.

Sorry to thread necro here, but I somehow have misplaced the metal tube/cage that is supposed to sit in the oil filter cap that runs in the ID of the filter (I have the genuine toyota 15620-31060). Is this a part that is sold as a piece, or do I have to buy a whole new filter housing cap to get a replacement?

You'd have to CANN that part off another housing unit...not sure they sell them individually...but I have not researched it.

An OEM is not that expensive...so I suggest buying a whole new one.

    NOTE: CANN=Cannibalize

Anyone happen to have a picture of the inside of the OEM toyota unit with the tube and its retention system so I can (or try to) verify which of these aftermarket ones will swap in?

Can't seem to find any OEM units that have fast enough shipping and my oil change is due :(

I can't find the photo with the PN listed on the box my Aluminum came in...but here's a side-by-side.

Good luck expediting your housing unit.

Thank you, but I was moreso looking for a picture down inside of the housing showing the tube's tabs and how it interfaces / is retained.

There's a stealership down the road I'm trying to get ahold of to see if they'll price match the OEM unit on Amazon so that I can go pick it up.

I have my spare plastic housing unit tucked away in the garage...I may be able to take a photo and upload...if no one does before end-of-day.

Check this I have spare aluminum housing from Amazon. Also, you should buy Motiv oil filter wrench so no fawk up. The black plastic housing is OEM that originally came with my 2023 Tacoma.

I had the center 3/8" rachet extension drain cover break off on mine, Ended up replacing with another one and I keep a spare on hand now. I usually just do my oil changes without removing it now too. Just remove the whole housing instead of draining it 1st.

I just looked at my plastic housing...I twisted the center piece to try and remove it but it's blocked on both sides by upward pointing/bendable catch that prevents twisting off.

I'm guessing you have to bend it in a way to let the center piece twist out.

The Aluminum Housing's center piece stood a little taller than the one in the plastic housing but was level with the filter. (See photo from post# 212)

I figured as long as the filter was that tall, the center piece would only give the filter more stability...not that it needs it.
