Above is a link to the noise. I have a 2016 Tacoma SR5 and have been hearing a knocking/ticking at idle whenever the engine heats up enough (after interstate or somewhat extensive driving). The truck has ~192k miles and the oil was changed at ~191k miles, and I just topped it off as well because it had burnt a good bit. It isn’t behind on any related service either. Serpentine belt looks good, and it sounds more like a knock from the cylinders or block itself anyways.

I know toyotas are infamous for unpleasantly loud and/or rough/sharp idling, but this is new and has become more profound. Anyone have any ideas?

I just bought mine (used). It’s a 2022 with 50k miles. Makes the same sound, or at least something very similar. Seems to drive normally though. Mainly just commenting so I can find out if this is something to worry about or not.

My 2018 with almost 80k miles sounds the same. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the Atkinson cycle.

The theory is it caused by a sticking lash adjuster. 2gr-fks used hydraulic lash adjusters. Oil pressure is low at idle. You can hear the noise disappears when rpms Increased by opened purge valve.

The injection cleaning cycle is more of a rapid click.

Its not. I have this noise once in a while and it is not related to injector cleaning cycle. Happens in Port injection mode
