Tailgate lock issue

Well I got into a used 2021 TRD Sport and had an issue with the tailgate lock not wanting to turn. After closer inspection, the mechanism was bound and has some corrosion to it. Would there be a good way to "clean" this up?

 

A good place to start might be by lubricating the lock itself. I would start with a penetrating type oil. Once the lock actually moves and works clean the rest of the mechanism with a small wire brush (tooth brush size). Then keep it lubed.

 

I think I may have some left in the garage, will just need a brush. I wasn't sure if using that would have been a good idea or not. Just was binding when I tried to use the key. I was able to manually move the latch internally to loosen it up and the key did start to work with maybe just a "little more" resistance than normal.

 

I'd say that the most likely binding point is the lock cylinder. Get some lube in there through the key way and work the key a bit

 

Not really sure that there will be much benefit at this point in to trying to clean up all the corrosion in that picture. But you should definitely lubricate all the pivot points. For something like this, I prefer lithium grease given it's durability.

 

Kind of where my thought on it was too, but I figured I would at least give it a shot before digging deeper

 

PB blast it, scrub it with a wire brush. Then clean it really well, and coat with grease before buttoning it back up

 

Once you clean it up a bit, you might also consider using Lock Ease.

I have a 2021 Sport and installed the OEM Tailgate lock early in my ownership.

Wanted to do a comparison (Not to show off) but Geeze!

That's gonna require some serious cleaning which this thread has good advice.

Oh...before I forget, I did put a press washer to hold the actuator arm in place...even though the photo doesn't show it.

Yeah, I purchased used and with the limited miles on it I was shocked to see this. However under closer inspection they must have done many beach trips since I found sand and shell under the tailgate skin.

I was able to clean it up for the most part and so far after some oil it moves freely! So I went ahead and installed the lock. Hopefully won't have any issues in the future, but it's something to monitor.
