Hey, I'm posting here because I don't want to ask the x husband.
Was Toyota supposed to replace the whole frame with that recall?

I apologize as I do not have that paperwork in front of me right now. I have heard some negative things about former owners of the dealership and I don't trust them because of something that happened.

The dealership is now under new owners but many of the same employees are still there.

I don't think my whole frame was replaced. My current mechanic said he can undercoat my truck for $350.

Also, what about ceramic coating? What should I expect to pay or is this something you can do yourself?

The last question: What is a reasonable price to pay for someone to buff out scratches? Do most detailers do this or would a dealership be better?

The reason I distrust the dealership is I went for service and a plastic piece on the tonneau (sp) cover was missing. The service guy told me I might need a new cover.
The cover was included in the deal and I think the covers go for about a grand.

He went to transfer me to the rental dept. and I said "You gotta be f in kidding me!"
I am gullible but I am not stupid. I can easily replace this plastic piece and not buy a whole new cover.
Apparently the transfer had not gone through when I had my outburst. He said "I"m still here.

    oops

Here is the frame recall. Should answer some of your question.

I can’t comment on the frame recall but can offer something about the buffing and ceramic coating.
I’d suggest find someone local that does ceramic coating that includes prep work, which can include buffing and polishing out some scratches. I’d recommend an actual detailed. It can be done DIY including the ceramic coating. You’d want the paint correction/buffing done before the ceramic coating.
Depending where you go and how much paint correction it can range 1-2.5K.

Likely they didn’t replace the frame only did the recall that involved cleaning out the boxed in sections of the frame by the catalyst converters then injecting a greasy goop in there and putting plastic caps to hold it in. If this was done then your frame is under the recall warranty for 12 years from date of in service. I get the dealer to check mine every two years to make sure it’s still good.

    Thank you for the info!

I am going to call Toyota and see if I can get a different dealership to check out the frame.

I’m not aware that any frame program for any Tacoma generation was ever a recall. That term has specific legal meaning and requirements (and rights for those affected).

It’s convenient to call it a recall, and that term’s everywhere on TW, but technically it’s not correct.

Toyota used variations of something like enhanced warranty, extended/enhanced service program, or similar phrases. Their program was completely voluntary on Toyota’s part, unlike a true recall.

Good for Toyota for knowing we owners would be *seriously* pissed if they didn’t do something (but shame on them and Dana Corp for not fixing this for 20 years).

Toyota (mostly) limited their service campaign to vehicles originally delivered or operated within a list of cold weather states where road salt and frequent freeze-thaw cycles make corrosion more likely.

Was Maryland one of those states? One would need to check, but I didn’t think so.
