I didn’t think any Goodman newer than about 2004-2005 had a reciprocating compressor, but it seems like I learn something new everyday…

 

I’ll bet the previous owner of this unit wondered why it wasn’t as efficient as it used to be…

The date of manufacture for a Goodman air conditioner or heat pump can be found in the first four digits of the 10-digit serial number:

• The first two digits indicate the year of manufacture
  
  
• The second two digits indicate the month of manufacture"

I had to cheat and look it up. When the year could also be week or month, it gets confusing on the manufacturer and how they do it.

 

Why would something that new have a reciprocating compressor? I thought Goodmans from 2006 onward had scrolls…

So, I was driving to pick up Amanda this morning and saw a work truck and some HVAC guts in the driveway of the neighbor’s house.

Most of the houses in my girlfriend’s neighborhood were built in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The overwhelming majority have oil heat, and some of have baseboard while others have forced air (Gwyn’s house has baseboard and Amanda’s has forced air; it all depends on what the original buyer of the house wanted). A select few that are closer to the main road have natural gas, but most have oil.

The house this air handler came out of had a massive addition built on, which includes a 2-car garage with an in-law suite above. The original house has a straight-cool A/C and oil heat, while the addition has a heat pump. Apparently, the indoor coil for the heat pump blew, and it was new enough to still be under warranty. The heat pump is a Lennox, probably 13-15 SEER.

I pulled over and asked if I could take anything. Unfortunately, they had to keep the coil for warranty purposes, but they let me take the air handler casing and the entire blower motor assembly! Keep in mind that I still have the complete 3-ton central A/C system, so this is just money in the bank!

Have you ever heard of The Unico System? I think it’s a universal system meant for use with all brands in older and/or unique houses where a normal air handler won’t fit…

 

Not that I can recall.

 

No idea. I haven't worked for a goodman dealer since 2004. Goodman isn't a brand I deal with much in my area, not of that vintage anyways.

 

It appeared to be a modular 2-piece unit. This half has the blower motor assembly in it…

 

My idea of a “vintage” Goodman (or Janitrol) is anything older than 2006; I found these pictures online…
