it depends on how the rears are adjusted or if they were completely bled, when the rear cylinders are honed alot of fluid is lost so some fluid is replaced

It's a good idea. Caliper pistons/bleeder screw will rust over time. Of course at that point a new caliper is easier than rebuilding.

I took the XC90 in for the 40 K service on Wed. That includes a brake system flush. There are so many systems that use that fluid it's crazy. Changing every four years is NOT excessive!

Use a socket to initially loosen the bleeders not an open wrench.. sometimes they seize a bit compliments from weather and time.

Best is a 6 point box end. I have been known to put a vise-grip on the wrench for the stubborn fittings. Nothing worse than a round over!

I have serviced rear wheel brake cylinders that have required honing to restore piston sealing integrity.
I have several three stone "brake cylinder" hones for the purpose.

    But

When such efforts are required, the entire rear braking hydraulic system is drained down while the actuator cylinder is brought to the bench for refurbishment.

A thorough replacement of fluid along with bleeding is just part of the process. It can hardly go unattended.

    Hence my question.

Do you "hone in place"? and pinch off the flex hose while doing the honing? seems like more trouble to me.

but you ask what one is?
    ok
honed in place .........new cups, covers, a kit.....but now most people just put a new cylinder on it rather than servicing it.......and hardly any rear drum vehicles around any more
of course fluid is lost but not all.....fill and bleed

My question was about your comment of mushy brakes. The way I see it, after the work, the brakes will be at their BEST!

Perhaps you run with a shoddy crowd. ;-)

    You wrote,

In my thinking, All the fluid was lost, and replaced, and the air bled. while doing a cylinder hone.

By the way, brake fluid is a GREAT honing fluid. Stones cut fast, and the contaminated fluid flushes with water!

if the rears are not adjusted correctly the pedal will travel further until brakes work

I always liked how the black fender flares on the TRD Off-road and Pro models look. Plastidip to the rescue!

Not cheap since they took the old clear mask off of the hood first.

Nice 3rd brake! I have the same one. That's a job I hope to never have to do again.
