    Hi,

What is the best type of undercoating?
Does it need to be reapplied every so often?

I've read how some of you have done this yourselves.
I'm thinking I need to get a professional to do this as I don't know what heck I'm doing.

I'm in Southern NH and I know someone recommended a shop in NH but I forget the name.

Nh oil and undercoating is near you. They do both oil and wax coating depending on what you want. Located in Chichester, NH. If you still have a 2016 oil based is the only type you should use. Wax based coating needs to be applied to a new/newer frame.

There is a shop in Hudson, NH that does WoolWax:

    Fred's Auto Repair & Diagnostics
    3 Industrial Drive
    Unit #2
    Hudson, NH
    03051
    United States
    (978) 515-2886

I had him do my new Tacoma last year. It cost $220 and it took a 2-3 hours, if I remember correctly.

Yearly rustproofing for the Win Laurie. Don't just get the Frame done, get it all done. Body panels, rockers, doors, hood, etc...

DIY is nasty work, but it doesn't take long ;-) Wear goggles and grubby cloths.

Wool wax, Fluid film Black, NH , I have used them all. NH is the most durable, but the most difficult to apply.

Every year! Now is the time! Plus, there is a thread "somewhere" near of a group activity in Ma. that would make it VERY easy for you.

You had a good experience with NHOU? I had mine done last year and the product seemed to seperate/ thin out and dripped like crazy. It stayed on there but there's many spots with hanging drips of oil that's seperated from the black coloring and when you touch it it's got the consistency of water or brake fluid. The fluid film and woolwax that I sprayed myself on various areas that weren't hit or have been worked on since then have stayed nice and tacky.

I live a mile off pavement. The road dust dries out anything I spray on the underside the first day.
Perhaps the folks that did your spray used excessive solvent to aid spraying.

As mentioned, NH is the most difficult stuff to apply. I use a brush in many areas. Spraying is so messy.

I don’t have any issues with gravel roads, I drive them almost every time I use my truck, as it’s what I take to the range. I have Krown reapply yearly though.

While I do understand to importance of getting the frame protected from rust, I’m just curious in asking the question of how do you still keep the underside ‘clean’ if the undercoating (whichever product mentioned in above comments) is tacky/sticky and attracts road grime easily? If I go through the car wash that does under blasting then it will wash the undercoating off and all my money will literally go right down the drain…

it won’t all spray off, but I would agree, I’m guessing some does wash off. I don’t run my truck through car washes that often and only elect to get the bottom blaster a few times a year in the winter. Dort isn’t going to hurt the underside and no one can see it.

I think this is something you have to accept is not a possibility with oil undercoating, I have. There's companies that offer a clear wax type coating that is supposed to only be applied to brand new vehicles that may be an option, but I don't have any experience with them. To me the creeping and constant wetness of the oil is what sold me on it, and if the truck looks ugly underneath and I ruin a few sweatshirts working on it, so be it.

The underside of my truck is a greasy, grimy mess and is not pleasant to work under.

It's also as rust free as you will ever see an 8 year old vehicle be having spent it's whole life in the rust belt.

    Your choice.

I also live in the north east and I had my truck professionally undercoated at a reputable detail shop.

The first treatment was expensive but then you take it back every year and they reapply the undercoating to any faded areas for free. I think it’s well worth it given our harsh winters and the reputations the Tacoma frames have for rusting.
