Ready for the storage unit?

 

I've seen this a bunch, what exactly are these guys doing?

 

My square cut outs were already even within .005", so I expected my gantry to roll smoothly like so



It's the beveling on the top side that I was dealing with; fighting maybe an additional 3 degrees that I didn't have with my other plasma cutter setup

Got all the bearing blocks loosened up so I can go through it as if it's a new assembly

 

I noticed this guy coming back and forth a while ago but literally as soon as I got my camera out to snap a Pic he dipped.

Yeah I've seen those patterns by a lot of twin engine planes all over but could t ever figure out what they were accomplishing.

 

Maybe training hours for a new pilot.

 

Survey work / mapping I believe.
If its near dark could be lidar mapping.

 

Not the same pattern or purpose, but...

Every now and then I'll notice the drone of a loitering plane over me here in Colorado Springs. The flight tracker shows it flying in near perfect circles over the city for hours at a time. Each lap only takes a few minutes. Must be thrilling for the pilots.

I looked up the tail number once and it was registered to this company: http://www.twinotter.com/

I assume they're doing some sort of instrument testing for the aerospace/defense industry. Lots of big government contractors around here.

I don't know what it is about that particular plane but I'll hear it on the first or second lap over the city, sometimes even if I'm indoors, and nobody around me seems to notice it unless I point it out.

Nah that usually has a more dynamic pattern. The pattern is definitely a preprogrammed route run by the autopilot, not exactly useful for gaining experience. Plus like I said it is always in twins, not a Cessna or smaller craft trying to build hours for your license. I could be wrong though but seems a waste of your trying to build true experience.

Yeah that makes sense but usually is in bum fuck nowhere which I found odd, ironically.

I've seen that pattern in open water during S&R ops. I would think it would be different for over land ops but again, I don't know much.
