Makes sense regarding the properties of wood. They say their stocks are thoroughly dried, etc.

I’ve always had tight grouping with this rifle. That said I never bothered to push it beyond 150 yards or so. If it can still do this I’ll be content with the extra adjustability. And, never mind those flyers up top. That was barrel warm up or some such excuse :p it’s a .223 but I’ve taken deer with it.

While the stock is wood, it is a laminate, each layer glued to the next. A laminate stock does not flex and warp like a solid wood stock will.

Yes, laminate may not be as stable as a high end synthetic/fiberglass, in reality, you probably have nothing to worry about.

Those were my thoughts too. I don’t do any competition shooting. As long as I can castrate a hummingbird from a football field away, I’m happy.

“In reality” people worry about them all the time, will most things being .002 in tolerance throughout out the rifle. Thousands of dollars get spend in bedding, machining and blue printing.

I stand by what I said.

If you just wanted a “it’s awesome,” then it’s awesome bro. No worries.

I didn’t disagree with you. For the price point this looks like it’ll change the way I use the rifle. I haven’t had a thumb hole stock before. I’m mostly getting it for that - the adjustability is a bonus. Comes with a steel recoil lug which is a nice. It checks the boxes and scratches the itch without getting a whole new firearm.

I’ll report back with range results in a few weeks or so.

I have several Boyds stocks. They're much better than the plastic ones they've replaced. I always shoot them before spending money on clearancing/bedding. Sometimes it's not necessary.

Wood stocks have been used on guns for hundreds of years.

Sure. Plastic isn’t always good. Aluminum blocks are the way to go, if it’s a light cheap plastic. But if you’re buying all the adjustable stuff…which is for “more precision” we aren’t talking about just a wood stock, for the sake of a wood stock anymore. Even the MDT field stock isn’t that much more money, and it has an aluminum bedding block, with comb height and length of pull adjustment as well.

You’re paying for those features. Yet all it takes is for the barrel to contact the barrel channel and you have an harmonics problem with wood. I’m not wrong on this.

Necessary is in the eye of the shooter. Apparently it’s good enough for the OP and he’s happy. Despite asking opinions. I gave a downside. It’s everyone’s choice to ignore it.

Not a darn thing...but I did pick up my Citadel Levetac 92 .38Special/.357 lever action from a buddy that clean it for me after getting a bunch of sand
blown into the innards while shooting at Ocotillo Wells. Wind kicked up and knocked the hell out of everything.

For the record, my guns in Boyd's stocks have all been free floated. They are only 100 yard guns.

I am building a 6.5 Creedmore bolt action - haven't decided what stock to use.

They’re suppose to be free floated. I’m sure for most here won’t have problems. I reckon a lot of sporting barrel profiles will be used. But for larger profiles like MTU and such, or depending on the stocks barrel inlet, if there’s a warping or wood movement, it will change the barrel harmonics.

This can occur during the rifles flex while under recoil. It’s one of many reasons why you hear about why some dudes $4000 full custom rifle won’t shoot well.

That’s not even getting into torq tuning the action bolts. Boyd’s DOES offer aluminum pillars as options now days, people..and gunsmiths use to do it back in the day. However, I’m pretty sure that they still don’t have anything for the recoil lug, and or any type of V block system. Warping…recoil lug…hunting…rain…tolerances, back to my main point.

It CAN change the pressure points over time. YMMV

As far as only 100y…all of this starts at 100y. If the gun is mediocre at 100y, it won’t get better at any distance moving forward.

I did have them add the aluminum pillar bedding and I added the aluminum bottom metal so I can be a nerd and use the inch pound torque wrench from my valve cover gaskets to put my rifle in its new home. I’ll be honest, I really doubt a torque wrench is necessary but I may still use it for the hell of it.
@dfanonymous I hear the points you’re making. If I spent $4k on a rifle build and it didn’t shoot well I would be irritated. I’ve owned this rifle since about 2008 and this is a fun way to make it new again. I suspect it won’t bite me in the ass but we shall see. I don’t have the stock yet; it’ll be here soon.
