I bought my 2021 SR5 a couple months ago and when i first bought it i would fill up my tank and get about 380-390 miles on the distance to empty, now its been about a month or 2 where ive only been getting 280 miles on a full tank. I know distance to empty isnt accurate but thats a drastic drop, any suggestions?

Change your driving style to increase your fuel economy. The distance to empty is just a rough calculation based off your past fuel economy. Easiest thing is to just ignore it, carry on with life and fill your tank before you run out of gas.

    Just drive it?

Your Tank Average MPG is generally accurate. You'll need to do the actual calcs during fill ups to know just how accurate it typically is.

But, you have a 21.1gal tank. DTE goes to 0mi when 19gal have been used. So in that time, has your MPGs dropped from about 20mpg to 15mpg? If not, then you have nothing to worry about. As you noted, DTE is a very gross estimate right after a fillup.

Also note that your MPGs will drop in winter from the longer enrichment cycle and lower temps. Even worse if you idle it before driving off.

...but you probably didn't actually ever get 380-390 before it was empty. The truck is learning your 'normal' mpg and applying that to the calculation.

    welcome aboard

I use the gas gauge. When the needle is pointing at 1/4 tank...I put in more fuel.

Mine (2020 Pro) did exactly that in the beginning. 390~ for the first month. Woooooo! Then 6 months later, 280 or so. Actually just did a reset (disconnected battery) trying to fix an audio issue last weekend and now I’m back up to 390 lol. I’m curious to see what it does in the coming months.

…I top off each Friday (or if I’m under 3/4) and always hope to see 400 lol.

When i drove home 165 miles from the dealer with my new 2020 sr5 tacoma, and it was some days later to fill the tank, the dash read 390, and so miles to the next fill up. To this day it varies from 360-405 miles. In your case 280 now from 390 sounds awful low.

That's crazy. I always see 410-425 when I fill up and I usually end up getting around 400 when you take into consideration idle times and stopping and going in traffic.

I used to hyper-mile an old Ford Focus and have a pretty efficient big toe, I know that helps..... It also gets me honked at on onramps.

Wow another useless comment complaining about a thread post.
This post is actually the only thread that’s pops up using Google, so I appreciate this post.

For all the nice people in here, I am also experiencing same issue where distance to empty estimate plummeted once I started using truck to tow boat to lake.

How long does it take for truck to reset/relearn that boat is winterized until next year or is disconnecting battery only solution? I was hoping to find a manual reset option from inside truck.

You can TRY disconnecting the negative battery cable to reset memory, but the estimate is based on the lifetime of usage. Drive like grandma for 5 years, then tow a big boat for 3 months. No more 21 MPG expectations in the internal tables. It will take another few years of driving like grandma to PARTIALLY BUT NOT COMPLETELY overcome that boat-towing period.
