Couple questions..... 1. Has anyone seen or heard from the OP of this thread Comachic? 2. Are you NYers ready for a possible snowfall of 6 inches frm Thursday to Friday? 3. Friday is opening season for trout anyone going fishing? I am ready but wont be fishing in the snow.

Crap is it really trout season already? Looks like I better keep an eye out for fishermen this weekend on the river. Normally they are friendly, but all to often they get pissed at me for enjoying a public resource

Little do they know me passing through actually helps them out.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll be staying off the trout runs for the next 2 weeks I guess. At least its not salmon season. If anyone has been to Pulaski for that fiasco they can tell you, but it is literally shoulder to shoulder with pissed off city people. The Macy's Day Parade of angry fishermen.

I have heard thats good fishing though. I hit smaller streams in Orange County though. I was going to wait until the first weekday that I was off to fish which would be Wednesday, but if the weather holds off I can fish Friday, it shouldnt be too bad. Just found out they stocked a nice pond by me on Monday.... I am ready

Drove over part of Dunbar Hollow Rd
The part that runs north - south between Dunbar Hollow Rd and Cass Hill Rd (Dunbar Hollow rd has three legs, see map)
    http://goo.gl/maps/ZBOf

I recommend this run, but for a newb like me I would recommend a partner and appropriate recover gear and points.

    What I did correctly:
Right vehicle, 4x4 11 regular cab (stock mechanically)
Companion, 1 yr old Labrador/Chesapeake Mix
Kept my thumbs up (well part of time)
    Stayed within my abilities
Didn't bottom out (mud flaps rubbed but I go slow)
    Didn't get stuck

    What I did wrong:
    Went by self
    Went just before dark
do not have a hitch / rear recovery point
Got scared that I would get stuck in the middle of woods (that is the fun part I guess!)

Took a run up this road, I had been all across about 20 years ago in a Subaru. Back then it was a poor road. It has not been worked on since and had snow and puddles and ruts.

Most of the way up it was just deep puddles, mud, ruts with on occasional big rock or jagged piece of shale. Road is narrow and I had to be careful of sides and not getting stuck while trying not to break my new truck.

I had to get out a few times to inspect the obstacles, kept it in 4HI and had no problems.

The road is very narrow and had to mind my sides from branch scratches.

Made it to a long up hill (I headed from south to north toward Cass Hill rd) with some very severe lateral angels and a steep transition. I didn't try the last part.

We backed up and found a spot to turn around and went through the fun stuff again. Too dark for photos, but it did happen.

    Much Fun!

Part of Dunbar Hollow is dirt/gravel and is maintained and plowed. Part is definitely dirt and not maintained, From south to north there were a large, deep puddles in the ruts with rocks, trees and part of the hill as obstacles.

The part that turned me back was a fairly steep and uneven section with a very high crown in the road. I was worried that I would get hung up on the crown or cause some other damage.

You might have more skill than me and looks like higher than my stock ground clearance.

Found these directions from a "retreat of sorts" that is on that road. I didn't see it but it was nearing dark and wasn't looking.

    DirectionsDunbar Hollow Westerlo, NY.
From the south: Take I-87 North to exit 21. After exiting the toll, make a left, and then a right onto 23 West. Travel 8 miles, and make a right onto 32 North. Travel 15 miles, and make a left onto 143 towards Westerlo. Travel 3/10 of a mile, and make a right onto 312. Travel 1.2 miles, and make a left onto Tan Hollow Road. Travel 1.3 miles, and make a right onto Dunbar Hollow Road. Travel 7/10 of a mile and make a left to stay on Dunbar Hollow Road. The road splits; stay on the right,

From Albany: Drive on Delaware Avenue (NY-443) past Clarksville, and make a left onto 312. Travel 2.3 miles, and make a right onto Dunbar Hollow Road. Travel 1.3 miles, and make a right to stay on Dunbar Hollow Road. The road splits; stay on the right

Important note! If you use Mapquest or other computerized mapping systems, you will sometimes be directed to travel on Cass Hill Road and then south on Dunbar Hollow Road. While this is technically correct, that side of Dunbar Hollow Road is virtually impassable, and using that route is highly discouraged.

Anyone around Cortland NY? I'm moving out there in early May. Still looking for a place to live in or around the area and then ill figure out some places to go camping and take my Tacoma out.

Looking forward to playing in the snow and making some use of the trdOR features.

I'm probably 20 miles or so away in Newark Valley. Grew up in Marathon and Cortland though. I know a few seasonal use roads that provide some challenge depending on your truck, and how much of the road has washed away. lol Some not so bad, more of a place to get away to that you wouldn't try to get to with the family sedan.

I suggest finding something on the outskirts of Cortland if you're looking to buy a house rather than rent. I rented a crappy ass apartment there for about $100 less than what I pay to own my house. (the apt was 700sqft, house is 2700 with 2 story barn and acre of land)

Also, why are you moving to Cortland if I may ask? Job market there sucks unless your favorite quotes are "do you want fries with that?" and "Thank you for shopping Wal-Mart! Please come again."
