It's weird. Like our eyes are only 30-60fps but theres definitely a noticeable smoothing out at like 120-144hz

    ...Gaia

I know a few use OnX @Brownmatthall @crashngiggles I haven't had that bad of luck with Gaia. It's never been great, storing routes and saving files and folders and all that has always been one of the most cumbersome file systems I have ever seen. I don't know that OnX is better in that regard. I think OnX is better for broverlanding.

Yeah I'm just not paying that new $75/yr subscription or whatever it is now. I used it exclusively for over 7 years now have have hundreds of miles of class 6 roads and such that I found from a trusted couple layers of their premium maps.

But since they've been bought out, even their most basic satellite map is premium. All set. For that kind of money you'd expect really good resolution, which their maps do not have.

Paywall galore. Only a basic road map is free now.

I just looked and I was on a 60$ renew.
I apparently paid 53$ for this year so must have been on a discount.
Cancelled the renew. This is future Rob's problem in May when it was up for renewal.
They usually have some pretty decent (50%+ off) deals that come in emails.

Anyway - I can recommend two apps I've used for different things: OsmAnd maps has offline maps, specifically offline walking directions - Google only does offline driving. This was awesome walking around Paris and London. I think I used it in San Diego too. And another is Maps.Me can do offline maps and (at least last year in NMW) had apple carplay as a free feature, it wasn't paywalled. I was able to download maps and routes, so I had the NMW map + our route plan in there and used that for nav.

Neither have the land owner overlays, GIS overlays, topo maps (maybe some do) etc that Gaia has but, hey, free.50 instead of 50$/year. But those both, for those purposes, worked well for me. I'd listen to Matt and Jared about OnX though, they both use it, I just play one on TV.

I have premium so I guess I get all those. The landowner map is pretty useful.

I thought that was behind super paywall, but I guess regular peon paywall subscribers get it too. Maybe can't save it off, I dunno. Cool part - I found my house, it has my name

There's a ton of maps, too.

    upload_2024-9-27_14-53-43.png

I guess these are the ones I have starred. That said if you only need a rough topo/USGS, no need to be paying 60$/year for that shenanigans.

In the US - these look non-premium:
    upload_2024-9-27_14-54-39.png

And some others. I know they have a cell service coverage map out there too. I haven't used it.

:notsure: I'm happy with Gaia but I don't know if I'm 60$/year happy with Gaia.

To quote Dennis: "I've paid more for a drink" (okay, for 60$, maybe two).

    I guess that's a fair point too. It's 60$, which is a lot.

OnX is 35 for the "basic" premium, which, this thing alone shows that the Gaia landowners map shows up on their single level premium, so I'd have to be on the 100$/year OnX for that.

    upload_2024-9-27_14-57-48.png

    upload_2024-9-27_14-58-28.png

If I can use one offline map...Might give OnX a go when Gaia runs up.
Also AOAA partnered with OnX if that's of concern to anyone.

Yep. Private property map, historic maps, the two usable satellite maps, the better topographic map, land depression map, and the national forest maps. I easily have hundreds of hours of planning trips in New England and did it all from scratch with just the wife and I. Oh well. At least I have all my tracks which covers a mega ton of NH, VT and ME.

Yeah, but 4 years in and you're $240 into "maps as a service" (how....). $60 should get you the maps. The following year's $60 should get you the updated maps. But you should still retain your maps imo. It's not like they're serving you anything extra that the basic plan isn't already.

I mean this is just 1/4th of the stuff that says up because we do it semi regularly. Haha. Zach and I have maps from leasing all the OG TW North Wood Maine trips and such. And the select Vermont runs that mapped all the passable fire roads in the lower and upper green mountain forest.

    Fortunately, I can export them.

If you have all the routes - Try OsmAnd.
Here's the list of premium features.
Long of the short, 5 offline maps, no android/apple car integration for free, trip recording, importing routes.
Premium gives you more offline, apple/android carplay, and some more maps.
40$ one time lifetime. I THINK @TreeFortRichard has this...

    https://osmand.net/docs/user/purchases/android

(ios is similar, but only 5 offline maps for free).
