Got some Ethylene Glycol from Amsoil 3 gallons of it... because I like to overpay for my stuff: https://www.amsoil.com/p/amsoil-passenger-car-light-truck-antifreeze-coolant-antpc/?code=ANTPC1G-EA

Plan to change my coolant tomorrow, I am at 92,000 miles probably should have done it sooner? Oh well

See a lot of people say to stick to the Toyota pink stuff or the truck is going to collapse into a black hole and all kinds of other dramatic stuff

Am I going to be okay? Just checking... maybe I am missing something. Thanks guys

I guess new coolant is better than old coolant. :notsure:

Personally I prefer to use OEM coolant & ATF, as far as other fluids any brand name product that meets specifications is fine.

So … the stuff that was in there for 92k miles and 8 years is “not good enough”?

it’s really hard to predict long term damage from the “wrong” coolant. So I don’t think you’ll get any constructive answers as the vast majority of gen 3s are on the original stuff

You’ll be ok if you flush it properly, which would involve opening up the block drains and pulling the heater hoses after running water in it.
It would be a lot less work to just drain the block, radiator and put Toyota spec pink back in there.

No: you're not going to be OK... The black hole and all other dramatic stuff hypothesis/theory is a true fact: Look it up. If it's on the Internet, it has to be true. ...and besides: the Toyota pink stiff is only about $2/gal more than the Walmart Special Sauce stuff. A $6 savings on a 50,000 mile recommended change interval.

(You're 42,000 miles late guy.)

    You'll be fine :proposetoast:

It’s just a teensy bit ironic to mock those in favor of the OEM stuff and follow it up with “is the stuff I bought ok?”

I don’t think anybody was mocking anyone. I was simply saying that people on here say really bad things happen if you use a different brand of coolant than the Toyota pink stuff all I’m asking is is there really a reason behind it other than cost

Just making sure there’s not some kind of magical concoction that’s gonna be made by by me using the same type of coolant, but from a different brand. I already had sitting around. I wasn’t gonna go buy Toyota already had sitting here for a year ago

This is what I was looking for and actually I kind of failed to mention and forgot I had the water pump replaced at 45,000 miles so they would’ve done at least some kind of drain and refill then so I’m almost on par with schedule not on purpose, but on accident!

I'm only going off memory, but I "think" the first recommended coolant change is @ 100K. (or 10 years?)

I believe the recommendation is 100k or 5 years.

This is a place where I feel the recommended interval is too long.

Although freeze protection is what most people think of when these topics come up corrosion protection is far more important.

The only thing protecting the head gaskets are the additives in the coolant, the additives become depleted over time.

Modern coolants are very good - they need to be to protect modern all aluminum engines.

The old cast iron engines from the dinosaur days were much more forgiving.

The water pump job was probably just topped off, but it helps.

I follow the recommendations of AMD/The Car Care Nut Channel, which is every 50,000. His main reason was that coolant gets acidic over time and can contribute to leaks: especially on the earlier 4.0L V6. I use the correct color Toyota fluid: mainly because when a leak develops, as it dries it leaves a very noticeable pink mineral accumulation at the problem spot over time.

It is as I thought I remembered, 100K or 10 years.
At least, as per the manual..

Way back when I was a youngin, changing out the coolant was almost an annual affair. Now that shit pretty much lasts forever! As long as it tests satisfactorily, I let it ride.

In the days of my youth, when we looked into the radiator and found the dirty brown water was low, we just added more..

My first car was a $300 '77 Maverick, and I had to make payments. lol

    Initial swap @ 10 years or 100K.
    *5 = 50K or every 60 months, thereafter... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The answer to your question is yes you’ll be just fine using that coolant in your Taco. There will be no ill effects. You may still collapse into a black hole but it won’t be from the coolant.
