How happy are you with the 2.7L 4x4

Unfortunately very few people will buy it so it makes no sense for yota to make it

 

I bought the 2018 Tacoma Access 4x4 with the 2.7 and the AT. After test driving a V6 with the double cab I couldn’t see much performance difference especially for the price difference. I use this truck for hunting and fishing mostly on back roads or state routes, which in Vermont often ARE back roads. My milage varies a lot; on back roads its about 17 but on pavement it’s 23-24. For me, this is the perfect truck since I added heated seats and intermittent wipers.

 

Just wanted to add, bought about a month ago my first car ever, actually never driven anything before, so know nothing what v6 / v8 feel like in lighter cars or trucks. I really like it.

 

Here in Canada I dont even see 2.7L available to configure on the site anymore....looks like all V6 models here now. Too bad as the Tacoma needs affordable options,. especially up here where stuff is even more overpriced relative to the US.

 

Not really an equal comparison, i have a real first gen 1995.5 96’ 2.7 4x4 and i love it! I get 16 streets and best 25mpg highway.

it wont win races but itll beat a pos thats broken down on the highway.

 

Like most stated it won’t win any races but it’s more than sufficient and off-road it shines. If you’ve driven other 4cyl cars from the 90s I had a Saturn sc1 as a daily before and my foot would be 75% in it to maintain 70mph got close to 40mpg though. The modern 4cyls have much more grunt. If you want to throw on armor 35s etc get the 6. The 4 has its limitations but for how I use it, I love it.

 

I just bought a 2023 SR 4x4 with the 2.7L I4. It is a great truck. I live at the edge of the Catskill Mountains and I can confirm that it does not like steep grades; but it will climb anything if you're patient. It gets decent milage and is AWESOME on old logging roads in 4WD. I use this truck to drive around town, hunting, rough camping, and towing a 4x8 utility trailer (~700lbs) and teardrop (~850lbs). This is the last incarnation of this legendary CAST IRON block beast in North America. My wife is Guatemalan and I was convinced that the 2.7L is the toughest Toyota engine after seeing how many Hilux 2.7L 4x4s are on the road there. That country has the most extreme roads and mountains I have ever personally seen and Toyota Hilux (yes, modern ones) are everywhere- some are diesels. I miss the manual transmission, but I have to say that there is a lot of peace of mind in knowing about this engine's legendary reliability. Use ECT Power mode if you have to climb anything crazy. I can attest that the 3.5L is also slow. Atkinson Cycle with the 3.5L is a nonstarter for me. The new 2.3L Turbo makes me nervous about reliability. My 2 cents... Get one of these slow, durable workhorses while you still can!!

 

New to the forum and really glad to have found you guys. I am planning on buying a Tacoma and have been trying to decide between the V6 and the L4. The price difference is considerable and the V6 is hard to find here. By contrast the L4 is abundant in extremely low mileage. I’ll admit this has concerned me. I was thinking maybe people just don’t like them and dump them before long. Thanks for reassuring me

It is just a slow truck. People think they need to go super fast all the time. I do not know why. It is ridiculous. Test drive it and take it up a big hill. They scream but it is designed this way and they are tough engines. If you do not need 4x4, then do not buy a 4x4 truck. They are considerably heavier. The 2.7 4x4 IS AWESOME off-road. With aggressive tires I think it can hang with Jeeps.

 

Were you ever able to get a 3rd gen + access cab + 2.7L 4cyl + 4x4 + manual? Or were a couple of these options mutually exclusive?

 

Yes only in 2016 and 17 after that no stick with the 2.7, my guess is popularity but that is the best configuration

 

I have zero issues with mine. Both at sea level and 8000 feet. I have a topper on it. I haul stuff around the house and my mountain bikes. I have the rear seat delete so there’s extra storage back there.

It’s not fast, but I have zero issues keeping up with the completely insane Bay Area traffic around here, including merging on short on ramps on the 101.

Biggest plus is that it was dirt cheap so it’s completely paid off now.

I wish they kept the manual, but can’t have everything.

 

In N.W. PA. along I-80 near Clarion I had a 78 year old friend pass away last week and his widow wants to sell their clean 2016 SR, A.C., 4X4, 2.7L red in color with fairly low miles. Interested P.M. me and I'll Try to contact her this weekend for better details.

 

Did she contact you in person? My mom on Facebook and my elderly neighbor on Facebook have been hit with notifications of spouses wanting to sell trucks after their loved ones passed away.

The reason those are so cheap now is that it was the slowest & most sluggish new vehicle available for purchase in North America at the time.

And that engine is no more reliable than the 3.5L and definitely not more reliable than the 4.0L.

If you want it you need to buy it cheap because you’ll have a hell of a time getting rid of it, at least here on the west coast

 

There are selling pretty damn high around here.



That is 4k more than I paid new two years ago.

Part of selling something is knowing your market. Sounds like you can get a pretty decent offer and they are not “giving them away.” They haven’t been giving any new or used cars away since whatever happened in 2020.
