I have an 04 tacoma TRD 4 door, 6cyl. With 139k. I'm missing my original hood. Would appreciate help figuring out engine number and a good source for the kit. I see the the tkt -026 basic kit on Amazon, and OEM kits on Ebay. Would like to be certain these are the correct ones. Thank you.

For timing I wouldn’t use anything but OEM, meaning Aisin. Go to RockAuto, they sell the Aisin kit for a good price, TKT025.

Do not skip the tensioner either. Thats what I’m replacing this weekend. Previous owner did the timing belt & pulleys but not the tensioner… why they skipped a $50 part I’ll never know, but now I basically have to do the whole job over again just for the tensioner.

Thank you for the quick reply, is there anything else I need to know about my engine to be certain the tkt025 is correct?

Aircabinman is the go-to for kits if you're going the Ebay route

100% genuine OEM and he bundles stuff pretty well

What is the issues with the tensioner?
I am ticking near 360k on original tensioner with no issue that I am aware of? Will it start making a noise or something
I did get a new OEM one in case its needed next down the road but don't recall that being a 50$ part from the YOTA dealershop on the 40 discount on MSRP

I posted a video in another thread I started, take a listen. Sounds like something slapping under the timing cover. I wrote it off originally as just old engine sound but I’m glad I asked the forum.

AISIN kit from rockauto. I've installed at least a dozen of them and have had no issues on my cars or friends or customers. That goes for 3.4L 5vz, 3.3L 3mz and 4.7L 2UZ.

Do you do always do cams and crank seals by default?

No. If they are leaking or seeping then I would.

Is that because disturbing them might cause them to leak later?

A little of that. Also depends on the mileage and vehicle age. If this is a sub 200k mile engine, I'm not swapping them unless leaking. A 300k mile engine I would definitely recommend it.

I have an 01 with 180k miles on it. Almost time to tear into the timing belt and I'll have to decide whether to replace those seals or not. I'm kinda in agreement with you, no leaks then leave it alone. But the next time I do that belt would probably be in another 15 years. So what would you do, assuming it's not leaking right now?

Replace them. It's easy to do.
