I’ve recently purchased a 2012 Tacoma with the 4.0 V6. Only now am I reading about the pump failure. My truck only has 101k miles on it and seems to have no issues. Works perfectly. Should I be concerned about the secondary air pump or valves failing? It has not had the recall and missed the deadline. And should I do the uni filter mod?

    thanks!

2012 4.0s had a higher than average failure rate on the valves due to moisture buildup, 13-15 models do a "purge" every time the engine is turned off to help eliminate the issue but this was never added to 12 models.
There was never a recall on the SAIS, there was a Special Service Campaign/Customer Support Program/Extended Warranty on the SAIS components valid 10 years from the date the trucks were originally sold (Date of First Use) and as such is now expired for all 2012s.

Certainly won't hurt to do the uni filter mod and get rid of the foam filter which is another potential issue with the system.

Also @hewitt-tech makes a bypass module to eliminate the SAIS which is an option if you aren't in an emissions inspection area and your SAIS becomes problematic.

+1 for the Hewitt-Tech solution, I have seen it work well on someone's "off-road-use only" 2.5 gen Tacoma. (2012-2015.) A bit expensive, but it works.

Appreciate the responses, I live in Nova Scotia Canada so there’s no issues with emissions being deleted. The car I just sold was a 2014 Jetta TDi and I removed the DPF, cats and EGR and still got safety stickers no problem.

If it doesn't look like this then it hasn't been fixed.

Secondary Air Injection System pump and switching valve(s), equipped on 05-15 2.7L and 2012-15 4.0L Tacoma's.

It's purpose is to inject fresh air into the exhaust during a cold start to help the catyletic converters to light off quicker and reduce cold start emissions but the system can be problematic mainly due to moisture collecting in the valves.

Correct, this is the redesigned secondary air pump that Toyota is installing when they do the recall. Without the cover it looks like the below. My point is if what you have looks different than my pics you probably have the old pump installed.

Mine is two months out of date with 62000 miles.
No issues but wondering if i should get it all changed out and if so will they do it.
Surly being in great condition and only a few months out of the 10 year mark.

I really doubt any dealer would do anything especially since you don't have an issue and are out of the extended warranty period but I suppose it's worth checking.

Do the UNI filter mod and go from there. I did it when I first got the truck in 2021. (104k miles). I was happy to see the foam piece that starts all the problems was intact and in good shape but I did the mod anyway. (The foam piece can deteriorate over time and get blown into the valves down stream) If nothing else it will give you peace of mind. I checked it again at around 120k and the UNI filter was fine: no cleaning or replacement needed. There are posts in here about it and many videos on YouTube on how to do it. Watch more than one of them for different pointers. Mine had the large cover and the small front cover. I put the large cover back on, (which some folks in vids say is not necessary) and saved the round front cover and the foam piece. Some of the pieces resist letting go when taking it apart... just go easy with it.

Yes. Unless you can see: "UniFilter" on the front round piece, you will have to take that top cover and the front round one off and open the pump to verify the foam piece status. If you remove the covers and see a round, red-pleated filter with a screen over the pleats, that says "UniFilter" on the round front plastic piece, it likely has been done. If that is the case, replace the covers, you're done. :proposetoast:

The filter is only one cause of the pump failing the internals also fail. When mine failed the filter was 100% intact. The updated replacement pump Toyota installed doesn't even have a filter.
