    How was that angle of attack not beyond the wings stall? I'm amazed it still took off!

    They've released a preliminary report:

    https://dedalo.sti.fab.mil.br/en/85259

    I recommend searching on youtube for blancolirio. It's run by Juan Browne, a current 777 captain, who dissects high visibility accidents with clear & concise no-nonsense information. His latest discusses the Brazil ATR preliminary report and helps make sense of it.

    The first thing I do when I hear of an accident is tune in to Juan Brown's channel. Another great resource is the Beechtalk Crash analysis thread.

    Not an answer to your pondering, but still a fun fact:

    When Pres Eisenhower created the interstate highway system for us (U.S.), he had a stipulation that all of it would be capable of accepting the takeoff weight of B-47s and B-52s (largest non-Russian birds at the time). So most U.S. military aircraft today should be comfortable making use of any portion that is straight, level, and clear of obstructions. I for one am happy to see this put into practice. Cheers for sharing the photo! (Of course, the photo may not even involve a section of Interstate.)

    My active-duty time was mostly in helos (we sat it down darn near anywhere we wanted), thus I don't have a clue as to how often this is practiced by fixed wing, if ever --- until now.

    It was an ANG exercise, half found the news link before me. I know they’ve done it once or twice before on more remote, 2 lane highways in the state. Not only do the highways up there have less traffic but they are also very flat and straight. Some of that is due to geography but also because that area also houses (housed?) a lot of minuteman missile silos and the open routes were preferred for the transports associated to those.

    Now I know why so many roads north of Ellsworth AFB in SD were so stinking straight! You've enlightened me once again.

    SD road planners definitely don’t have many geographical obstacles to work around either :laugh:
    Bridges are another clue. Tiny road, beefy reinforced bridge in the middle of nowhere? Yep, built for a nuke transport.

    @MTgirl

    I also preomised to share photos & details about the recent trip to Germany marking the 80th anniversary of dad's B-17 getting shot down. And the recovery of one of his engines and props.
    Haven't forgotten, just can't find enough uninterrupted time to write it out. Also have to move photos from camera to TW. Soon though, hopefully.

    It’s all fun and games until the rocket pod comes off and smashes out two engines and you crash land in the Arctic.
