Who says with a downhill slope, tailwind, and 50 mph you can't eak out 30.1 miles to the gallon. And the haters say Tacoma's have horrible mileage. Never before and probably never again! 20240928_170220~2.jpg

I got 22.8 last summer driving from Bennett, Colorado to Montrose, CO.

I70W to C470S to 285S to 50W and went up and down several 6-7% grades and passes.

Not too shabby for a truck that is supposed to average 17-18 mpg.

Ya know I find I ease up to speed, steady as she goes, and can get 22-24-26 on nice flat highways.
Even at 70-75mph I just ease to speed and keep RPMs as low as I can.

Very happy with this truck.... and I look good in it too.

On a twenty mile stretch from Cottonwood Meadows to Lone Pine, I got 10 mpg on the way up and 88 mpg on the way down, but really, the best I've gotten on a long sustained drive, from Lee Vining to L.A. going over Tioga Pass, and climbing both out of Yosemite Valley to drop into Fresno and then over the Grapevine, driving between 40 and 50 mph for ten hours because of the heavy rain from the hurricane a year ago, I hit 28.2 mpg for the entire trip. You can often have short drives where the mpg is much higher than normal but a longer drive will always average things out with hills and wind, but speed is the biggest obstacle for good fuel economy for our rather large, heavy and not very aerodynamic trucks, an on that ten hour drive, I only drove that slow because any faster there way hydroplaning. And no cruise control at all on that trip either.

The display is usually off by about 1-1.5 mpg when you do the math after a fillup, having filled it before a trip. Our v6 with the factory hard folding tonneau cover got almost 27 mpg on the on the 260 mile trip picking it up. Mostly 45-60 mph with rain and construction delays for most of the trip and part of the time with the ECT power button on to vary the rpm. A long highway trip is not the best way to break in a new engine but no choice. The hard cover makes a big difference. Have not gotten anywhere close to that since, especially since selling the tcover after 2 months and installing a Leer 180 cap a few months later. Normally get from 16-23 depending on how much highway driving. 30 mpg would require a strong breeze going in your direction!

The real question is what kind of engine oil are you all using to reach these absurdly incorrect MPG numbers? And how often do you change it? And how many of you failed basic math in grade school?

I got 18 while pulling my camper trailer through the mountains. Coasting downhill for 10 miles at a time really helps lol

I don't rely on that piece of crap. I do the math you know divide the mileage by the amount of fuel when I fill up. Usually pretty close. I always zero my trip meter when I fill up and have been for years just a habit.

FINALLY! Someone provides the context to one of these mileage posts.
