It’s in the FSM for all countries and Mexico owner’s manual.

I found a chart in the widely-circulated 2016 TSM that says that 15W-40 oil is OK in the 2 GR engine.

Not a concern. I’ve got 60K miles of only using heavier oil from 0°F to 115°F. VVT isn’t picky, it just needs motor oil. It doesn’t care what viscosity.

Read all about the viscosity for different countries and climates.

But the manual owners for North America is still the "right" one.

    That's good.
As I said, the chances of it happening are in a 2GR are slim.

But the guys yelling, "EPA.. run what ever you want", might not want to apply that logic to all engines.

Of course not. I would hope anybody making some decisions about what they want to run is at least doing research and using logic if they were to do so.

    Me too.
And I'd hope they ignore the people that offer no factual evidence of what ever it is they are replying.

I see you do have evidence, as you ran a thicker oil.
    Great.

    Others not so much.

The actual concern OP had, was answered long ago.
The 2GR doesn't suffer LSPI. The use of heavier oil is not need.
Not for LSPI, not in a NA 2GR engine.

The manual says that you can run a higher viscosity oil if you are operating under high load conditions. That tells me that it is ok to run a higher viscosity oil. I run 5w-30.

It is my understanding the 0W portion is only when cold starting.
The -20 portion is the engine at temperature, which is nearly all the time it is running.

Unless the operating temperature is far above the design temps, it seems pointless to run a thicker oil in an engine with such tight machine tolerances.
