I ordered my parts from rock auto yesterday and they arrived today, amazing service!
I am getting mentally prepared to start the job. It's been years since I have done a job like this. In the mid 80s I did my timing belt on my 6cyl cylinder supra which I believe had the same engine. When I worked at a German car repair shop around that time the guys there were using a green gasket glue which did not dry hard. I cannot remember the name. What do you all recommend for the water pump gasket?

The kit should have a water pump gasket I believe. Don't add any extra sealant to it. Install dry. Clean mating surface on engine of course.

You will need to make or purchase a tool to hold the harmonic balancer. They sell one on Amazon and I recommend it for removal and for torquing the harmonic balancer bolt to spec when assembling.

That was my next question thank you
We use to use the green goo on everything from head gaskets to o-rings. Never had any issues with it.

Next question, I have a 40 year old mac tool 1/4" drive torque wrench that hasn't worked in 30 years. I'm debating sending it in to get a repair estimate. The wrench I've used for the past 30 years is a no name half" drive click one, which has seemed to work fine for my needs. It definitely does not go past
150 ft lbs. Recommations? It sounds like I will need to also replace crankshaft bolt?

Most of my torque wrenches are $500 snap on. I recently bought a $100 craftsman click type that goes up to 250 ft lbs.

I own a torque comparator, it tests the accuracy of a torque wrench. The new craftsman I got is dead on accurate. Can't speak to longevity, but new they are accurate.

What model is your craftsman? Back when I was fixing Volkswagen in the late 70s and eighties. When we would install the 36mm flywheel bolt, we would just put red locktite on it, open the impact wrench fully and let her rip. Never had an issue.

My other mechanic co workers do the same. 8 uggaduggas and call it good. I prefer a torque wrench. I'll get the model for you in a bit when I get home.

    Nice,
So 8 uggabuggas equals 217 ft lbs?

I have everything disassembled, but I'm waiting on tool to hold crankshaft. In the meantime doing some other stuff, oil change, fuel filter. I noticed the coolant hose coming off thermastat housing is not in great shape. Is this the coolant bypass hose? I read the other end goes to oil cooler? How is this to change? I cant find much on this.

Im waiting on my harmonic balancer pully bolt tool from Amazon. It was supposed to arrive yesterday but delivery has changed to Wednesday. So i pulled my radiator and tried shooting it off with my impact wrench. My impact is not great my compressor is great for my nail guns but maybe not so much for this use. Although it does get to 150 psi. Anyway that was a no go. So i tried taking a 2x6 drilling some holes and going that route, and just split the wood and bent the bolts. So it looks like im waiting until Wednesday

You can make one with 4 foot 1/4” x 1.5 or 2” flat bar and drill holes for grade 8 3/8 bolts. Cut the heads off the bolts and use a nut on each side of the threads to hold the stud that you made out of the bolts in place as well as a pivot made out of another 3/8 bolt.

    Dimensions are not to scale
