URD. Sounds like the same situation. Made the throws really short, but that makes it have a lot less feel. I had alwayts wanted to try putting on in and now im disappointed. i think ill know more after a week of driving it.

Interesting. I know @BossFoss put a urd one in too and he loved it.

Only one I've felt was @SconnieHailer Hurst one. It was nice.

Been curious to try it myself. But also never felt it necessary.

I mean at the time I'm pretty sure I enjoyed some aspects of it, but I can see what Ben is saying. Don't think I would do it again today if given the opportunity.

The shifts from 1-2 are hard to do fast so i wanted to see if that would tighten it up, usually the other shifts dont matter as much. i kinda like how the shifter sits a little taller. ill give it some time. after 14 years i am really tuned into how it felt, so just because it is different might not be bad.

Ok after putting 200 miles on the truck today, cruising up to 9k ft, the shifter is feeling better. Didn't jam up in 4th at all and while it'll take me a while to get used to where each great is... I kinda started to like it. Idk if it is normal but it makes more of a click when going into gear, basically a gated shifter now  only issue I had was it's hard to go from neutral to first. So I hold the clutch in, hit 2nd, then up to first and there's no problem there.

Anyways views were good, and we had fun.

The not wanting to go to first is common. Mine do that. Do the same thing 2nd to first.

Yeah, it was rare before, needed more now. i learned that trick with reverse, if it doesnt go in easily, hit second, then back and it slots right in. And after 200 miles I topped the tank back off and it got 20.8 mpgs today... And I learned that the reservation that my house borders has premium for a whole dollar less a gallon. 91 octane for $3.39/gal. Talk about a great day.

Hope you guys enjoy some of the shots from today :)

Now that I'vee found the correct thread...

Thanks to Zane and his shop, I finally got my new reinforced spindles installed. These have brand new hubs and wheel bearings too. While in there, also turned the rotors and installed new brake pads, new outer tie rods and lower ball joints.

Yeah I know, that's where I've landed for now. It makes the most sense for my use, as much as I want the big tires.
Looks awesome!! How big of a bitch is doing the wheel bearings?

Also why turn the rotors instead of new ones, iirc new ones are pretty cheap.

Happy to help, was a pretty fun job too!

If you have a 20T press and enough dunnage and scraps of steel to make your own press fixture as well as press slugs... not all that hard. Doing the first one took like 45-50mins then the next one was maybe 15. Just had to make a wheel bearing size press slug and figure out how to hold the weird shaped spindle.

He had OEM Toyota Tundra rotors that were well above minimum thickness still, getting them turned was like $60 for the pair and took an hour. A single new Tundra rotor from Toyotapartsdeal is $78 currently + shipping most other outlets have them near $92 + shipping

I think that my fronts are cooked. I get that low frequency hum at speed. Just dread having to find a competent shop. No way I am in a position to do this myself.

And that kinda makes sense. I've never turned, just replaced because I'm lazy and hate the parts store trip LOL price never seemed worth it, but maybe prices are up now making it more tempting.

I do like the hurst. It's notchy yea but I do think it's just because you have less of a moment arm. Also there's just no way around shifting the second Gen trans slow. I get a lot of people in town waving arms behind me on the 1-2 shift off stop lights in traffic. Makes me giggle

The wheel bearing job in our trucks is intimidating. Timmy has a video on it that does a good job of showing the process.

As a diy job it is doable with a good press and the right fixtures as Zane mentioned. And as long as you are prepared to deal with the old bearing coming apart when the hub is pressed out. Not a big deal for us as I had new hubs to go in. But if you are going to reuse your old hubs, getting the old half bearing off the old hub raises the level of complexity of the job a few notches.

My old brake rotors were in very good shape. No pulsing or vibrations under braking. So it made sense to have them trued up. That cost will vary with location. Around here on the wetside I was quoted $35-$40 per rotor. But the O'Reilly's near Zane's place charged me $30 each to do them.

My 1-2 is faster if I try, but it feels like the flywheel is too heavy to make it smooth, the revs just hang a bit too long.

Wait the bearing came apart for you?

My tool just pressed it all in and out in one piece. Resused my hubs "fairly" easily. It did tweak the inner splines a tiny bit. In retro spect I'd have just bought new ones to do it but didn't know at the time. Was easy enough to fix.

Yeah, from what I've read, it happens that way sometimes. The hub is a very tight fit in the bearing and sometimes the outer half of the bearing comes out with the hub.

It seems smart to figure it might happen and plan accordingly. The hubs are kind of pricey. ~$200 each plus shipping unless you get them during one of the Toyota parts houses 25% off sales. I ended up paying $150 each including shipping. $302.74 delivered to be exact.

I know they wont stay that way and you don't get to see them much but they are works of machined art.

You can get the bearing half off the hub easily with a map torch or a little tougher with a Dremel to reuse
