I recently bought a 2019 Tacoma with just 20,000 miles on it. I put about 3,000 miles on it and twice the trans. got stuck in 3rd gear for no apparent reason. It wasn't in sport mode just in the regular drive mode. It would eventually shift out of 3rd gear on it's own after a while. Is there a fix for this?

If you have no warranty...then I would start with a transmission fluid change, although, you shouldn't be seeing issues where that is needed at such low mileage...but it won't hurt anything.

So I'd start with a trans fluid change and go from there. Hopefully, it's just low on fluid causing it to hang.

It's funny that it ONLY does it in 3rd gear though.

Stuck in third as in it trys to take off in third when you stop? Or just won’t shift past 3rd? Doesn’t make much sense..

are you driving in to a headwind, uphill, towing, any mods, etc?
The 3.5 likes to rev to make it's power, so it's not uncommon to hold lower gears,,, depending on the situation.
I just got back from a small road trip, and mine was holding 4th on the highway around 68 mph. It was because I was driving in to the wind, I could follow an eighteen wheeler and it would shift in to 5th or 6th, until I needed to pass them.

If I'm driving say 40 mph it will for some strange reason shift into third from presumably 6th gear and then it wants to stay in third. Eventually it will revert back to the normal driving mode. It's done this twice in 3,000 miles to me.

I would absolutely first change the ATF using the correct WS fluid before trying to diagnose it further.

Have you connected a scan tool for any codes that won't turn on the cel or do you have the cel on?

I have not connected a scan tool and there's no cel light on. It did it again today. I was driving along doing 50 in 6th gear when it "just shifted" on it's own into 3rd gear. I put into neutral then back into drive and it was ok.

First things first, check fluid level and adjust if needed. Then find a scan tool and see if the are any codes. Not all codes with turn on the cel. I would presume the trans fluid is low or over filled. Start there first and report back.

I'll check it. Do you have to bring it, (trans.) up to temp to check it?
