The overseas markets kept the 442 for the 95-97s, not sure about the 100 series though. I figured the used the 343 here to be compatible with OBD2.

There's nothing inherently different electronically about the A442F vs the A340/1/3F, in fact I'd be willing to wager if you spliced the wiring harness together from a 343 computer to a 442 trans it would still work.

Some people hate on the 98-99s cause of the two pinion thing, but I think that issue is way overblown on the forums. Most of the failures that do happen are ring an pinion anyway, which has nothing to do with 2 vs 4 pinion.

I wonder why the Australian and other global markets persisted with the 442 then. It doesn’t seem like the 343 is any less reliable, and is also slightly more efficient.

I can see that. I turn off OD when I'm in the mountains. No complaints and the transmission runs cool. I'm running almost 33" tires so a little more OD than stock. I sure like 16 MPG on the highway. Not much MPG difference between it and the Taco for my suburban driving. I'm happy with my tire size, rotational mass, and MPG. I think if I spend money on anything in the next 4 or 5 months, it will be a Diesel heater.

I went with a Harrop (now Eaton) eLocker and solved that problem. That was an easy installation that has been trouble free. I watch newer air locker setups blow out seals and have problems. Sometimes simple just works.

You complained about gas mileage on your truck.

That thing is going to be worse.

IDC about gas mileage anymore since I don’t drive that much now.

I finally figured out what he should buy. An AWD Honda Element. Good on gas, reliable, SUV. Plenty of cargo space to store is drama.

I had a conversation with the guy that rebuilt the 04 Honda Civic trans about fluids. It drives better with the rebuilt transmission than it did when it was new from the dealership. Updated parts did improve a bad situation.

He suggested using Dex 6 -- Valvoline Dex Merc in everything that I own. It turns out that when I changed the 02 LC fluid, this is what I used because WM stopped selling the red bottle Max Life. It may run a little cooler as 125f is a common temp for the transmission when not under a lot of load. 100s have a big trans fluid cooler.

He said Toyota transmissions that I own are good and its rare to see one that needs to be rebuilt. He said buying parts to rebuild a Toyota transmission make rebuilding very expensive. They do some insane number of GM truck transmission rebuilds every week. I'm glad that I dodged that bullet years ago.

I saw a bunch of them on an off-road trip going somewhere out west. There is a club and people are all into them. A buddy had one and said it used a lot of gas.

For the element or your normal behavior?
They have a cult following. For probably a good reason. I mean can you get a 2009 Tacoma for $8k? Doesn't seem that out of the ballpark. I saw one this morning for $25k.
