Its difficult to eat that much protein on a limited budget. Thats why I supplement with protein shakes.

If I had unlimited cash to spend on food lol I would be huge without having to buy protein powders!

I think Safeway should sponsor me for something, and pay me to eat their food :D:D

yeah, the only supplements worth taking are a good multi-vitamin, creatine and glutamine, and of course a good protein powder with a complete BCAA profile

people think creatine is all water weight but it's not, creatine creates more ATP in the muscle, which is what the muscle feeds off of for energy, which increases your muscular endurance which means your workouts last longer, you can do more sets and reps, which increases your strength and thus increases muscle mass, so it's a great supplement

there's no way to get enough protein by just eating food, so protein powder supplementation is a must, I recommend at least a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, I actually do 1.5 grams of protein per pound to make sure I get enough absorbed because you lose some in digestion

that's great that you compete, I've been competing for about 7 years, you got any pics? and do you not drink any shakes when prepping for a show?

I cut shakes for the most part as pre, post and night when I was 6 wks out. I just competed at my 2nd show at the Northern here, in Colorado. I placed 2nd in men's novice light wt and 3rd in Welter wt.
Sorry for the crappy pix, cell phone over Internet

looking great bro, you've got a good structure, just need more mass and get super lean and you'll be good to go ;) I've got an article on bodybuilding.com about my training, diet and other pre-contest stuff here if you're interested:

when do you plan on doing another show?

Thanks. I was prob around 3.5% bf on stage. Lean was not an issue. My upper body responds great genetically so, upper body size is never a prob; it's these damn legs that take forever to grow!

Im going to stay lean for summer and begin to bulk in Sept thru April2012 for the Colorado State in July 2012...assuming the wife let's me. I keep spending money on the truck :)

yeah legs are extremely important, heavy high-volume squats are great for size but the one thing that brought my outer sweep out more than anything was heavy leg press with my feet and knees completely together, before my quads fully developed I would do those every leg workout and it really worked great

I got down to 3.25, took circumference measurements and skin folds every week for 15 weeks, calories changed every week, every portion of every meal had to be weighed out, carbs slowly decreased every week, good fats slowly increased every week, cardio slowly increased every week, and didn't change my weight routine and stayed fairly heavy so I wouldn't lose my fullness and I was able to come in very dry and hard, started my diet at 193 and weighed in at 175 for the competition and about a week later after I got my carbs and water back in me I was up to 205

if you want any diet/training tips just hit me up in my Q&A thread in the health forum bro & good luck! and I hear you on the truck spending I've been doing a lot of that myself lately haha :p

Same here. I always incorporate close stance leg presses in the workout. For some reason, I've seen a better response doing front squats than standard. Well, that and heavy volume leg presses helped a lot.
I began at 183 and dripped to 159 by stage. Not an oz of "film" was on me. Cardio increased as I was about 6 wks out to 7x a week! Ugh!

yeah man I hate cardio lol it's the worst but you gotta do it :p and legs take a while sometimes, I've got a lot of friends that struggle with that but it's just been something that's naturally been a strong point for me, same with abs and a thick back, ARMS is what I've struggled with, they're in proportion to my calves so it's not a HUGE weak point but they need to be bigger to match my chest and back and they're a little overpowered by my shoulders which grow really quick along with chest, back and legs but my arms are stubborn  my training struggles with 225 on bench when I'm putting up 315, and he's barely squatting 315 and I'm doing 500 for reps but he kicks my ASS on arm day lol so he loves that day and I hate it :p
