Does anyone have any feedback on this cap? It looks pretty solid.

I got one from the first run. A secure cap became a necessity due to work. This is definitely not a hot weather sleeping situation for your truck. It is good for keeping tools/gear secure.

It’s nice. I am very skeptical on the advertised weight. Perhaps that is the weight without the doors on it idk.

Putting it together is very easy if you have assembled and wrenched on things. I did it with my six year old which made it a tad harder than doing it solo…

it says 4 guys to place it. 3 strong guys is plenty but not 2 guys, unless you are 2 reallllly strong guys. Making micro adjustments once it is on the truck to get it lined up perfect is easy by yourself just lift and slide in very small moves.

it leaked a tiny bit driving in downpour, right in the spot where you double up the sticky gasket stuff. It was my fault I rushed placing the gasket there. Spend your time, she will be tight.

I don’t know if there is a way to adjust the height the doors open to, but currently it opens to the perfect height to bang your head into when walking around your truck with a hat on, looking down…(I guess it’s time to lift the truck)

the stupid rubber things on the bolts that contact the topper on the lock mechanism fell off. I will try some small pieces of fuel line and ‘thread’ them onto the bolts.

The doors seal really nice and don’t have any slop or play in them. They open nice and clean when unlocked.

The locking mechanisms seem nice, absolutely no wiggle or play in them. The locks themselves, the key is kinda tough to get in and out and lined up to turn the lock. I am nit picking here but if it gets worse, I may look into replacing the cylinders.

I am really happy with it and like it a lot for the price. Haven’t seen a smart cap up close I am sure it is nicer(better be for the price).

Any specific questions I can try my best.

I appreciate you taking the time to list your experience with this cap. I won't be sleeping in it. I've just been looking for a reasonable solution to getting some extra storage space for the bed. I currently have the factory tonneau cover and it's not cutting it anymore. Haha. If you have any pictures you could share, that would be great! Thanks, again.

    No problem.

Fitment is pretty good. You can see how snug it is to the cab.

I actually noticed mine moved a tiny bit to the passenger side at the rear. Guess that’s a good reminder to retighten…

That is way too close for comfort, IMO.

lol almost didn’t post that pic cause I knew someone was going to say that. It looks crazy close in the pic. There’s probably 1/2” clearance between the cab light and the topper. Top can’t physically slide forward any further than where it is.

Thank you for the review, any updates or does anyone else have one that would like to share their experiences? One of these is pretty inviting given the price.

No mods yet, that's why I'm here!
I recently was on vacation in Bozeman MT in July. And there were all kinds of awesome looking toppers/shells on Tacos everywhere. This OVS and the SmartCap were in equal abundance and both looked like the truck had worn them for years, but still looked new from the factory with all kinds of accessories mounted all over them.

I did not get a chance to talk to any of the Taco owners to get an opinion, but I personally opted for SmartCap over OVS purely on looks.

Thanks for talking us through the cap! Super helpful.

I’m wondering if the top can be removed if I wanted to add a custom RTT? From the looks of the photos I’ve seen the top is a solid sheet that holds the walls together? I’m thinking of buying this and using extrusions to build out a frame and sewing up my own tent.

    Thanks!

I'm planning on picking one of these up later this week. I'm not completely convinced the bolts holding the hinges are are unable to be removed from the outside. I've read that they'll just spin but the dealer here that I'm picking it up from said he wasn't sure they couldn't be removed but that even if the hinges were removed, the way the doors lock would prevent someone from removing the door. I doubt this is true. Can anyone verify this? The primary reason I'm buying a cap is to secure items in the bed of the truck.

Also, I'm sure this is a crazy idea, but is there any reason it can't be assembled in place on the truck? I'm short handed this week so I'm wondering if I can join one side piece to the front piece, set this in place on the truck, line up the other side and join it to the front piece while it's sitting on the rail, then install the back piece.

Perhaps you'd be able to answer this question I asked above?

Yeah, you should be able to. It's the main tie-in point of the whole thing though, so be careful.
Look at the instructions and you'll see how it all goes together.

I'd love to see some more pictures. I've been eyeballing this cap for awhile now. How was the install? Thanks!
