Dang, sucks you were without power and cell service. At least Elon Musk came through for you. So what you’re saying is a fossil fuel generator is better than that fancy battery backup?

We rarely lose power but I don't know much about generators. What would be a decent one that could run a fridge and a window unit?

Been looking at these 6500/7500 watt ones. Which might be overkill.
Just realized they make dual fuel. May look at that since Tina works for a propane company.

Can't go wrong with that. I may look into a larger one down the road.

my jackery performed just fine but I’ll be investing in a whole house generator. This is the 3rd long term outage since we moved here two years ago. Out other house never had power loss really and we also weren’t on Duke energy. Not hard to connect the dots.

That's the way to go. I have a caterpillar 6500. Just gasoline, not dual fuel, but a great machine. I can run the AC for my entire house, or everything else. So I just switch between the two every few hours. It's also small enough of a generator that you can put it in a truck bed and take it anywhere. It's even big enough to run my welders. Really a nice sweet spot of a size without making the jump to a whole house.

My little 2400w generator can power my fridge and some other small stuff. AC sure would be nice but worst case scenario we just go in the camper.

did you install a transfer switch?

I'm in between a Champion 14kw stand by unit or a 7500w portable unit with a transfer switch. I have no other use for a generator so the stand by unit is probably the way to go for me, plus I already have a good sized propane tank to fuel it.

If you have no use for a portable unit, definitely go with the larger standby unit.

I have a whole house cutoff switch that isolates it from the grid, so if power goes out, I manually disconnect with the switch and then back-feed the house through one of my high amp welding outlets. Then I just keep an eye out for lights at the neighbors house to come back on, and I shut it down and flip on the grid switch. So I am the transfer switch. No risk of back feeding the grid if you're not dumb about it

This would be really cool ideas. But it's also what I drive everyday so I can't have it down for such fun activities.

Tree almost did the hardest part, cutting off the bed. I have a big pine that needs to come down. With a little strategic parking, we can have an excuse to work on the front end too

joking aside, your truck took that tree like a champ. hard to say for sure, but there doesn't appear to be any frame movement, which is impressive, since getting lightly rear ended with a trailer hitch on will fold the frame in half. new bed and bedside with some body work on the cab, and you'll be good as new! fingers crossed that your insurance is quick to react and not bogged down with the millions of other Helene related claims.

    That's
That's what I'm hoping. Everything looks fine other than the bed and tailgate. If insurance does pay out I'm tempted to take the bed off, maybe fab a flatbed of sorts and then work on a removable camper.

https://www.tacomaforce.com/product...ks-tacoma-ute-tray-and-canopy-bed-replacement these aren't horribly expensive. Especially if insurance gives you the funds... plus you can ask for fema assistance since we are in a state of emergency

It's definitely the way I'd go if my bed ever was destroyed.
