any jeep wrangler owners out there

Just wanted to know your honest opinion if you have one. I keep looking at new 2 door Williys. I'd get the V6 auto. The V6 has been around forever now, and the auto trans seems to have a good rep.
The rational part of my brain keeps saying...why the hell would you spend your money on that. They have a terrible rep when it comes to quality. Corrosion issues to worry about. Stellantis is being run into the ground, and has a good chance of not even being around in another 6 months.
Yet I still find myself liking solid axels and being able to bolt on 35's.
I like my Tacoma Trd OR, but would have to trade it in if I got a jeep.

 

I had a JK, and while I did like it,,, it was a toy, not a daily driver. The ride, noise, storage was terrible. Loading the back of a 2 door to go to the range was like playing Jenga. In the end, the second the old 3.8 started burning oil, I sold it off,, and glad I did.

 

2018 jk owner checking in here. Love mine but granted its only a spring/summer camping rig. No mechanical issues with mine, zero recalls and just change the oil and go. I had a factory paint issue on the cowl when it was delivered which the local dealer fixed back when it was new.

 

They do seem like more of a toy. Not much room in them. Keep trying to talk myself out of it. I was thinking about a new 4runner trd pro too. They're basically all gone though now. Everything coming in is pre sold. Now with the dock worker strike it could be a long long time till they ever get here.

 

I've owned a CJ7, two YJs, three TJs, an XJ and I currently own an LJ Rubicon. Personally, I would never use a modified Wrangler as a daily driver.

My friend owns a JKU on 35s with the 3.6 and auto. He's had a couple minor problems over six years including fuel injectors and sensors but nothing major. That V6 has good power when geared properly for larger tires.

 

Had a 55 willy's, flathead 6 banger, wish I could turn back the clock and get that back

 

For camping I remove the rear seat and add the cargo box with a swing hitch which helps make room for hiking packs, tent,cooler, etc and you still have access to the rear hatch. But yes a toy reliving my high school years of late 80's -1990 when I had a cj.

I had a JL Rubicon. Started its life on 33” and ended on tons and 40s.

Before I started tearing things apart and basically rebuilding it, it had a bunch of issues with the electronics. Locker issues, sway bar issues and electronic gremlins.


Never again will I own an another Jeep product.


Sold off the Jeep and built out a Tacoma. (Still building it) and bought a 4th gen 4Runner for a daily.

 

only way i would buy one is new and prob sell when the warranty is expired......and now the prices are stupid......bronco?

 

I'm getting 9k off list. Still over priced, but it's something. The bronco's look really nice. Ford/bronco has a long list of quality problems too. I'd like to stick with a simple V6 since I'll be keeping it for ever. The jeep is about the only thing left that has a non turbo, non direct injection engine.

 

I’ve got a 98 tj manual with 80k. Love it. Doors and top are always off. Drives like a go kart. Won’t hold enough to support a camping trip though.

 

People bring way too much camping now.

 

I owned one years ago and loved it, but that was “b/c” before children.

I agree with what others have said, they are excellent “fun rigs” or second vehicles, but I wouldn’t want for it to be my daily driver.

One new point to consider is ( in my experience) they are absolutely horrible on slick / snowy roads. The short wheelbase makes them very quick to spin.

 

Well… If you want a tent, 2 sleeping bags, water, food, maybe a chair or two? Daypacks, hiking poles, essential clothes, small camping stove, perhaps a cooler? Mountain bike essentials?
I guess you could leave the cooler out, forget about the recovery gear, bring a water filter, pack dehydrated food, only go where you’re gonna need limited clothes and are guaranteed good weather and leave the dog at home…

 

I don’t own one but I was at a keep dealer for many years.
My take: the JL is completely livable as a daily driver, as long as it’s not bastardized.
I personally would be weary of buying any Stellantis vehicle until the dust settles on the shakeup of the Chrysler group.
My brother has a 19 Sahara Unlimited, 50,000 perfect trouble free miles.

 

No dog but one persons gear should fit just fine.

 

My 2012 Jeep JK. Owned now for 4 years. Had to spend a few bucks on repairs then I would have liked to, my choice. But have been on a few road trips and always got me home. 3.6 good engine plenty of power but I did have the lifter issues. 100000 miles and at the moment runs very strong. no oil burn. I do change Oil every 5000 miles and a filter. I plan to keep until it dies. Just a toy.

 

No dog??? I guess you’re going solo and no chairs or real food. Or maybe no beer. That’s a backpacking trip not a camping trip

 

I've had 4. An 83, 89, 99, and a 2010. I realize that tells you nothing about the quality of new ones, but I do have some insight to what ownership is like.

IMO they are fun toys to drive, but not a serious vehicle that I'd want to drive every day. My wife and I bought all of ours used as a 3rd vehicle to play around with. Mostly driven close to home, but we did take the 2010 on a 1000-mile round road trip once. I rarely took the top down, but 6 months out of the year the doors and back windows were off and in storage. You get plenty of wind in your face that way and some rain and sun protection.

They hold their value well, especially when buying used. We got almost all of our money back when selling all 4 of ours. We drove each of ours 2-4 years until something came up that we needed extra money for. They were almost as good as money in the bank, except you get to play with it. I sold one to pay for a new roof for example. A few years later when I had some extra money, I'd buy another. I don't currently own one but could see another in our future.

I never had a single problem with any of mine and all of them were 10 years old or older when I sold them. Of course, I didn't keep any of them more than 4 years and didn't run up a ton of miles on them either.

The interior is small and cramped. Towing anything is nearly impossible. The newer ones made after 2008 are more comfortable and get decent fuel mileage. Very little cargo room even in the 4 door versions. Back seat in any of them is a joke for adults. Consider them for kids only. The 4.0L I-6 engine is a great engine but got worse fuel mileage than a full-size truck.

In summary, they are a great toy to play with, but I'd take a Tacoma 10 times out of 10 for all around use. I'd never consider a new one to just use as a toy. If I buy another, I'll find one priced between $5K-$10K.
