Hi all, I have found that the ECT button does help with some of the gear hunting, but the truck does seem quieter when not in ECT. How are you all finding this tradeoff? Thanks.

I’m not a fan of the ECT.
I always use S mode and lock 5th and 6th out depending on my road speed. I won’t allow 6th until about 75 mph.
Less engine lugging and instant control of gear changes.

Does running in S4 around town result in less gear hunting? And, does it hurt anything to do this? Thanks

It absolutely will not hurt anything, try it. Just remember to upshift when going on a freeway.
I don’t even use 6th on the interstate most of the time. I live in a hilly area, after 75 mph or on level ground I use 6th.

The 6 speed transmission really is a 4 speed with a double over drive. Leaving it in DRIVE all the time invites up/down shifting due to the tall gearing of 5 & 6. Use the S mode to manually control gear selection. 4th is perfect around town. You see, the engine makes power above say 3000 rpm+ so you have to keep it in the power band for it to perform. Save 5 & 6 for open road use.

I use ECT with the shifter in D. I use S mode for the occasional brake help. To the op: that noise you’re hearing is where (unfortunately) the powerband is, the ect does a great job of staying in it through the gear range with both of my 22 tacomas

I agree 4th gear is perfect around town. I’ve really come around to liking this motor by not letting the thing struggle in overdrive all the time.
