Circuit Opening Relay Location???

That is correct. I'm not sure if Tacomas are the same way but the circuit opening relay on pre-Tacomas waits for oil pressure sensor input before powering the fuel pump

 

This is great! I found the George Schenfeld thread for this issue (a 95 Tacoma) while standing in line at Auto Zone getting ready to buy a fuel pump. I see that its origin is from waaaay back. That means that this problem could happen at any time which takes some of the magic away from driving the world's most reliable vehicle. Anyway, it helped me a lot in convincing me to keep looking for the Circuit Open Relay which was, actually, easily found by removing the panel just below the steering column. A quick test with 12VDC, as per my awesome Haynes manual, tells me this thing, along with the main EFI relay, works just fine. I also put 12V onto the leads of my old fuel pump (yes, I changed it anyway. I mean, it IS 30 years old and I already dropped the tank) and it jumped like a fish so I have to think that it's good which is now pointing me toward the ECM, per the discussion. So, the Haynes has a good electrical diagram & schematic so I'm going to follow connections from the ECM to the fuel pump. If it turns the direction of the ECU, I could use some advice in making sure I obtain one that is correctly matched to my vehicle so as I heard that this is a fine but critical line.
Painfully experienced, please advise.

Also, if this looks to anyone like I'm heading in the wrong direction, let me know (with details).

Old thread, I know, but it's still a mystery where the Open Circuit Relay is on my truck - 2001 Tacoma (4cyl). Removed all the panels and can't find it. Some say it's green, other say it's under the fuse bank. Any ideas? (Problem is the same as others' - fuel not getting to fuel rail after hard braking).

 

So i literally just replaced mine this week after a crank/no start situation. It was right here in this area where you appear to have some random fuse holder?! Any idea what that's about? Part of an alarm system?

Well, I realize now that the pic i found on the internet actually came from this thread so you've probably already seen that...

@themattman67 you may need to consult the 2001 FSM to find it.

 

Been a while but I think it is this one:

 

Yep - the big green Circuit Open Relay just isn't there. The small black RY302 Relay on the lower right corner of the fuse block may be it, but replacing it did not fix the problem. Still crank/no start. What else could be interrupting power to the fuel pump?

 

Did you have any luck matt?

Hey guys, so I have a 2001 Tacoma 2.7 I'm having a similar issue where the truck turns on for 2-3 sec, then dies. it was working properly fine the day before. Anyways i changed the fuel pump, same issue. i changed the coil packs same issue i back-probed the blue wire on the fuel pump itself and on the relay, and applied 12V to it, and still it did not stay running, died right away. I checked my fuses they are all good i am getting fuel because i disconected where the filter if, and was spraying. It sounds like it wants to turn on but then just dies.

 

It's cylinder 1. It's the wire in coil pack of youbcheck with light it may work. But cylinder 1 controls everything. I replaced pigtail from autozone. Haven't had a problem since. Mine would start. Then die after 2 seconds. Had spark. Had fuel. I'm telling you. It's coil 1 pigtail

 

JayJay007 how did you know it was bad? How did you test and confirm I'm looking at the wiring diagram, showing that wire red and blk is the one that controls all 4.

 

I had my buddy push pig tail in and hold while I crank it on. As soon as he moved his hand. Truck died.. mine had original pig tails from 2000. 25 years of getting knocked around or heat getting them brittle

 

So i wiggled the wires with my hand. Sure enough. Wires were super lose leading inside pig tail

 

JayJay007 gave that a try and no luck i tested the connector on the pigtail side, and im getting voltage to the connection

 

I did the same with a tester light. The light lit up. I even swapped coils around.. i just took a gamble and bought a new pig tail. Cut the old one out. Spliced in amd boom. Worked

 

Im make a jumper pig tail tmmr at work and try it out see what happens ima test my ECM right now just incase. Keep you posted
