By default the truck will lock itself after a period of time. I hated that behavior, so I disabled it in the settings. Check the settings in your head unit.

Also never leave anything of value in your truck. Problem solved.

BTW, you are in the 3rd gen forum (2016-2023).

You may be shooting yourself in the foot by installing an automatic lock; seeing how relentless this asshat thief has been.
You've heard it a hundred times, "locks only keep honest men honest". So... if you do lock it up, he (the asshat) may ruin your door, your door lock tumbler, or window, etc. to get to where he has scored so many times before. (Like a bear to the dog food bowl on the porch.) Maybe your very best course is to just keep the valuables out of there and leave it unlocked.

    Catch 22 here is:
Now you have to remember to remove the valuables each night. Which is probably harder to do than remembering to lock the door.

You'll also run the risk of leaving the keys in the truck, while putzing around installing mods or something, and the auto-lock engages without you wanting it to.
But hopefully it'll all come together for you. The a-hole will get caught, the doors will get locked, and you'll quit giving away your valuables to morons.

    Good luck with it. Sincerely.

    I drive a Miata.

I'll just reiterate motion lighting. I have had neighbors repeatedly broken into, cars stolen, and the like. And I have it on camera where someone took half-a step up my drive when the lights painted it like a baseball stadium. They immediately spun on their heel and kept walking up the street.

a suggested above. try the APP! it will alert you that your doors are unlocked (on your phone, of course)..the you can lock the doors with that same phone.

i let mine expire out, but i bet i locked my truck from long ass distances, when i wiffed locking the door.

Appreciate the insight—you’re not wrong about the risks of locking it up and potentially making things worse. But honestly, I'd rather deal with a broken window than just keep giving this guy free access.

I know leaving it unlocked avoids some hassle, but I can’t keep taking the chance. I’m boosting my camera setup—adding more angles and cloud storage.

The lights are a great idea, but I want to get this guy.

    Yeah.
An alarm that locks the doors and arms automatically and will go off if you try to open a door might be a great deterrent. This person is used to just opening a door, and once the alarm goes off on him he's not likely to stick around or try again.

I had a buddy in the navy back in the 80’s with a convertible mustang, we would ride to Honolulu with the top down, and then go bar hopping until closing time. He would always lock the doors (with the top down) and joke that it at least keeps the stupid criminals out. He never had anything taken, mainly because there was nothing to take….

I had heard (but not experienced) that rental car companies -on certain HI islands & certain locations- recommend (require?) that you leave the truck open when you walk away from your rental to go down to the beach, to surf, to dive, or whatever. The damage that the thieves WILL do to gain access is too costly for the rental companies. There isn't any doubt your car will be hit in specific beach parking locations, so just prepare for it. I didn't have any reason not to believe it.

This only applies after the truck has been locked. If you unlock it, there’s a setting that will re-lock it after a set time if a door hasn’t been opened. Doesn’t apply if you shut off the truck and don’t lock it. At least on my 2019, but there were a lot of changes to 20-23’s so this may not be the case. Wouldn’t hurt op to look into it anyway.
His truck is a 2021 and he said he already began taking everything of value out, so I’m not sure what the thief if doing at this point

If you remove the doors, you'll never have to remember locking them. Easiest solution IMO.

Me and a buddy were pondering building some box with timed solenoids to put our spare fobs in so it can “press lock” automatically every evening. Set it by front window and let it do its thing type thing. Just the crazy ideas of two busy people on the spectrum lol

Program it to lock out the fob afterwards so the signal can’t be copied and I’ll buy two!

I'm honestly getting to the point where chaining up a pit bull in my driveway sounds like a solid plan. Clearly, this guy isn’t afraid of cameras or locks—maybe a set of teeth would do the trick.

Doesn’t matter where you live. Folks drive around at night pulling on door handles. I live in a farming town and I have it on camera

Buy a Tesla. Transplant all the electronics, drivetrain, etc. from the Tesla into the Tacoma. You'll have the world's first EV Tacoma that locks itself when you walk away.

On a more serious note, I like the idea of pressing a key fob on a timer.

You could do something similar in the car with an ESP32 board (for WiFi control and to get the time) and a relay to virtually press the lock button at a certain time of day. Or even simpler, a timer that locks X minutes after ignition off. You'd just have to tap into the lock button and ignition power.
