I’m not opposed to a KLR since those are ~180 lb lighter than the S10. I think I’d prefer a DRZ or ideally a Honda but I don’t think I could get one of those in my price range.

Well, fun thing with honda is that as long as you don't damage it, they retain value so well you could stretch the budget with minimal loss. Still, in that range the easy pick for ok power and good offroad chops is the KLR. They are everywhere and super simple/easy to keep running.

If you are willing to spend a bit and run a 250...

I do like that 250! Though I’ve read they’re under dampened from the factory, I wonder if that would be an issue for me since I’m more of a beginner on dirt.

I’d also need to pull the lowering link off too.

The need to pull stuff might be something you can use to negotiate the price. Only thing I'd worry about it on would be highway. The 300 is about as small as I'd go if I planned to run 65 MPH for any length of time. That's the big downfall of the KLR as well.

For a much easier comfortable ride, but definitely more road oriented, there's the ol' v-strom. Still, just like the CB500X, it'll go more places than most riders are willing to attempt. https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2007-Suzuki-V-STROM-5033451864#sid=392665

I’m a little worried about the Vstrom’s weight. As much as I’d love an adventure bike for the comfort and riding to and from the route, I’m worried about the weight off road, though I suppose it’s not much heavier than the KLR.

Thing is, if you are taking the proper steps, the weight isn't an issue. You just don't ride it like a dirt bike is all. Besides, you're tall. That gives you leverage to pick them up. :boink:

Went back to work on Tuesday, used the wife's parking permit Tues/Weds since she was out of town on a work trip and I had daycare dropoff/pickup duties, but she's back and I FINALLY AM COMMUTING ON A BIKE AGAIN HALLELUJAH!

Took the S1000XR today and am now reconsidering selling it :anonymous: I will not be sad to hold onto it until Spring.. thing freaking rips.

Also, bonehead move, I'd had it in Road throttle map this whole time because I'm very, very inexperienced with wheelies and Dynamic and Dynamic pro modes have more limited wheelie control (or no wheelie control in pro), but swapped it over to see how different it was today on my way home, and I forgot it had an exhaust flapper. MUCH better sounding in dynamic with it open than road with it closed. The decel burbles and the blip when using the quickshifter are addicting as hell.

    WTF?

Did the insurance figure include lube? Going to need a lot if they want to screw you that hard.
