That's a tough call. Not sure if the one bill passed that was making auto thefts a class D felony (class B after that) in Missouri. If so, plugging you with bullet might be worth the 15 years in prison.

Self defense is tough to prove when you leave the castle. From someone that has been cleared of criminal prosecution and sued civilly...I can speak to this a little (I still won due to the burden of proof was rock solid).

The great thing is your state seems very proactive in law abiding citizen rights over sheltering criminals.

Unless a dog is properly trained, I wouldn't put a whole bunch of eggs in that basket. I share my home with retired police dog that will definitely bite and I still give him a 50/50. I had two males attempting to break into my home (the first time), dog pulled me out of my bed (literally), and he was slamming the front door very aggressively. This didn't stop the potential home invaders. They could hear and see my dog. Hard to miss a 105 lb German Shepherd that is barking like crazy through the sidelights.
    IMG_5788.jpg

I'm very positive they had a small caliber pistol to take care of that problem.

I set up on them behind cover. Rifle marks where I was. Problem was is they couldn't see me when looking through the kitchen window. IMG_5786.jpg

I made myself more available to see behind cover and popped up when the potential home invader looked for the last time.

    IMG_5787.jpg

They pulled the bump key out, walked away, got into their truck without plates, backed down my 275' driveway and drove off like nothing happened. I'm pretty certain it was the Swedish fish boxers that scared them away. Could have been the M4 too. Hard to say. In six years I have caught 4 people on my property and two home invasion attempts....and I live in a really nice area. Career thieves don't go to the ghetto.

I have never came out of my house. If they decide to make that poor choice of crossing that threshold, then it's on. I just like to give every opportunity to save their worthless lives so I don't have to sit in a courtroom for months....cuz that sucks.

So how did I stop all this from happening so frequently? Cameras don't scare people. Dogs usually don't. We just purchased a better entry to our property (remote gate) and a driveway sensor if the gate is left open. Best <1000.00 we ever spent.

Someone very wise on here once recommended putting range cards out. :D @G.T.

Nice write up. So what stopped them this time? Was it them peeking into your window and seeing your rifle?

I have to assume it was the presence of the homeowner, the Swedish fish boxers, or the M4.

This all took place in under two minutes. One of my door locks was already open.

Thanks for sharing your story and I appreciate you not glorifying the act of home defense. It’s a real life or death scenario and there’s no place for a street justice hard-on while planning or thinking about one.
It sounds like you’ve been through it legally speaking, and I feel it. I’m very fortunate that my state had recently enacted stand your ground when it happened to me.
Many of the rangemiesters and LARPers I know fail to think about or plan for the legal ramifications of a real self defense situation and instead focus on concealing weapons in every room and fantasize about actually using the skills they’ve practiced.

I just moved my niece in Denver to a new place. Her car was stolen, then her second one was broken into and they attempted to steal the car and did 2500.00 worth of damage. She had enough.

We talked to her about getting a different car (Hyundai) and/or moving to a place with a garage. She didn't want to get a garage or something different.

We ended up moving her and what happens the second night at her new place? Yep. Car broken into and the same 2500.00 worth in damage to the car. She then said "I heard something and should have ran out and confronted them. "
I was like.."yeah, great idea. Your 105 lb ass that took some self defense classes would work great."

AZ has such a horrible problem with those armed drive by thefts and groups of armed delinquents driving through neighborhoods to check for unlocked cars. It doesn't matter which part of valley you're in. Well, North Scottsdale is pretty safe/decent.

There was one a year or so back where the owner opened fire through his front door while armed burglars tried to enter. The police are absolutely worthless about responding and dealing with it unless someone was shot or killed too.
